KIGALI, March 7 (NNN-Xinhua) — At least 53 people were killed and 84 others injured in different parts of Rwanda due to disasters triggered by heavy rains since January this year, Ministry of Emergency Management said.

The ministry said in its disaster update that 858 houses, 196 hectares of crops, 23 roads, 17 bridges and eight churches, among others, were destroyed.

The update cited lightning, floods and rainstorms as the major causes of deaths.

KIGALI, Feb 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Women now constitute 55 per cent of cabinet seats, up from 52 per cent. The development follows Wednesday’s cabinet reshuffle which saw eight new faces, including four women, join cabinet.

Members of cabinet have also increased from 27 to 29 following the creation of two new positions at the level of state minister.

The new cabinet line-up includes 16 women.

The constitution requires that either gender must be represented at any decision-making organ at no less than 30 per cent.

KIGALI, Jan 19 (NNN-Xinhua) — About 8,000 Rwandans have so far been vaccinated against Ebola in the western districts of Rubavu and Rusizi bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), an official said.

“At least 5,000 people have been vaccinated against Ebola in Rubavu district at two different sites,” William Kanyankole, director of the Gisenyi Hospital in Rubavu district, said while briefing reporters about the district’s vaccination campaign.

Three more vaccination sites are set to open, he said, adding that about 3,000 have been vaccinated in Rusizi district.

KIGALI, Nov 7 (NNN-Xinhua) — The Rwandan government refused to intervene in a criminal case involving two detained former Rwandan military officers in a letter responding to British lawmakers’s request to release them.

Col. Tom Byabagamba, former bodyguard of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, and Brig. Gen. Frank Rusagara, former Rwandan defence attache to Britain, were convicted by a military court in the capital city Kigali in 2016 and were sentenced to imprisonment of 21 and 20 years respectively for inciting the public against the government and the country’s leadership.

KIGALI, Rwanda, Oct 22 (NNN-XINHUA) – Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, officially inaugurated a dry port, Kigali Logistics Platform, Rwanda’s largest inland cargo handling facility, in the capital city of Kigali, as the landlocked country bids to become a regional logistics hub.

The platform also hosts a 2,500-square metre bonded warehouse of Rwanda Digital Trading Hub of Alibaba Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP), Yiwu Global Innovation Centre.

KIGALI, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda's Senate on Thursday elected new president following a swearing-in ceremony of 20 new senators.

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame officiated the ceremony held at the parliamentary building in Kigali, capital city of Rwanda, sitting along with the outgoing Senate president Bernard Makuza, Chief Justice Sam Rugege and Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente at the platform.

Members of the two parliamentary chambers, the 26-member Senate and the 80-member lower house Chamber of Deputies were seated.

KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) — One afternoon last month, a young woman with a tablet computer sat next to Alphonsine Umurerwa on the living room couch, asking questions, listening carefully.

She learned that the woman’s 23-year-old daughter, Sandrine Umwungeri, had been very sick for about a year, gradually becoming so weak she stopped leaving their tin-roofed home in a hilly section of Rwanda’s capital city. The family thought she had malaria.

Medicines from a local pharmacy didn’t help. In March, she died.

27 September 2019; AFP: A group of 66 African refugees and asylum-seekers have arrived in Kigali from Libya, the UN said, the first in what could be thousands of people being helped to flee the conflict-torn country.

The move follows a pledge by President Paul Kagame in 2017 to offer a "home" to Africans after reports emerged of the torture, sexual violence and forced labour they suffer in Libya.

KIGALI, Rwanda, Sept 25 (NNN-XINHUA) – Local Rwandan residents, discovered 100 corpses of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, in the capital city Kigali, a local official said.

Residents have started retrieving the unidentified corpses in Nyarugenge district, a suburb of Kigali, since Friday, after getting information from a genocide survivor, who lived in the area during the 100-day tragedy, an executive secretary of Rwezamenyo Stella Mbabazi told Xinhua.

KIGALI, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Rwandan Minister of Health Diane Gashumba and her counterpart from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Pierre Kangudia met on Tuesday, agreeing to tighten border control to deal with cross-border movement, in a bid to prevent the spread of Ebola.
