Thousands of troops and rescue workers deployed after Typhoon Hagibis hits Tokyo

NAGANO, Japan (NNN-AGENCIES) — Thousands of troops and rescue workers were sent in here on Sunday to save stranded residents and fight floods caused by one of the worst typhoons to hit the country in recent history.

At least 30 people were killed in the typhoon that left vast sections of towns under water, CNA quoted public broadcaster NHK saying. Another 15 were missing and 177 injured by Typhoon Hagibis, which paralysed Tokyo on Saturday and dumped record levels of rain around Japan. About 100,000 homes were left without power.

Japan looks for missing after typhoon, warns of mudslides

TOKYO (AP) — Rescue crews in Japan dug through mudslides and searched near swollen rivers Monday as they looked for those missing from a typhoon that left as many as 36 dead and caused serious damage in central and northern Japan.

Typhoon Hagibis unleashed torrents of rain and strong winds Saturday that left thousands of homes on Japan’s main island flooded, damaged or without power.

Authorities warned more mudslides were possible with rain forecast for the affected area during the day Monday.

TOKYO, Oct 13 (NNN-NHK) – Ten people have died, and around 100 people injured, as of 10:30 a.m. local time (0130 GMT) today (Sunday), as Typhoon Hagibis ripped through Japan, including the Tokyo metropolitan area, with many rivers overflowing into residential areas across a wide area of the country.

Meanwhile, 14 people are missing across the country, according to a Kyodo News tally, based on information provided by rescuers and other authorities. The number of the missing is 15 from an NHK tally.

Japan launches major rescue after ‘immense’ typhoon floods

TOKYO (AP) — Helicopters plucked people from their flooded homes on Sunday as rescue efforts went into full force in wide areas of Japan after a powerful typhoon unleashed heavy rainfall on Tokyo and surrounding areas, leaving at least seven dead and 15 missing.

Public broadcaster NHK gave a higher toll than the government of 10 dead and 16 missing plus 128 injured as more details were coming in the from field, a day after Typhoon Hagibis made landfall south of Tokyo and moved northward.

With the weather agency here saying it expects Typhoon Hagibis, the 19th typhoon of the season, to make landfall over the weekend, Shinkansen bullet train services in eastern and northeastern Japan may be suspended on Saturday and Sunday, East Japan Railway Co. said.

Asian shares rise despite worries on US-China talks

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares rose Tuesday despite continuing worries about the health of the global economy ahead of trade talks between the U.S. and China.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 gained 1.1% to 21,604.16 in early trading. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 added nearly 0.6% to 6,599.60, while South Korea’s Kospi gained 0.7% to 2,035.69.

Chinese markets resumed trading after recent holidays. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.9% to 26,050.91, while the Shanghai Composite was up 0.6% at 2,921.43.

Japan searches for North Korean fishermen after collision

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese authorities said they rescued “dozens” of North Korean fishermen after their boat collided with a Japanese patrol vessel and sank Monday in areas crowded with poachers.

Coast Guard officials earlier said that about 20 North Korean crewmembers were thrown into the sea after their steel boat collided with a Japanese Fisheries Agency inspection boat off Japan’s northern coast.

Officials later said they rescued far more than first thought, but did not give an exact number. They said they were still doing the math and making sure nobody was missing.

Japan plans to pardon 600,000 to mark Emperor’s enthronement

TOKYO, Oct 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Japanese government is planning to grant pardons to about 600,000 petty criminals to mark Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement ceremony on Oct 22, the Mainichi Shimbun daily said on Wednesday, citing unidentified government sources.

Those pardoned will have restrictions on their legal rights lifted, the paper said. In Japan, those who are convicted and fined are banned from obtaining physicians’, nurses’ and some other licenses for five years.
