TOKYO (AP) — U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida shortly after arriving in Tokyo for the state funeral of assassinated former leader Shinzo Abe.

Abe, a former prime minister who was assassinated in July, will be honored on Tuesday, and Harris is leading a U.S. delegation to pay its respects.

“The alliance between Japan and the United States is a cornerstone of what we believe is integral to peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region,” she said Monday at the Akasaka Palace.

TOKYO (AP) — A powerful typhoon approaching southern Japan pounded the region with strong winds and heavy rain Sunday, causing blackouts, paralyzing ground and air transportation and prompting the evacuation of thousands of people.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said Typhoon Nanmadol was near the southern island of Yakushima, packing maximum winds of 162 kilometers (101 miles) per hour. It slowly headed north to the country’s main southern island of Kyushu where it could make landfall later Sunday.

Nanmadol is forecast to turn east and reach Tokyo on Tuesday.

TOKYO, Sept 17 (Reuters) - The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a special typhoon warning on Saturday for Kagoshima prefecture on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's main islands, as the region braces for a powerful and potentially destructive super typhoon.

The warning came after the weather agency earlier in the day urged residents to evacuate parts of the Kyushu, ahead of the typhoon Nanmadol, expected to bring up to half a metre (20 inches) of rain when it makes landfall on Sunday.

TOKYO, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- A powerful typhoon is expected to approach southwest Japan during the weekend, likely bringing violent winds and heavy rain, Japanese weather officials said on Friday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said large and powerful Typhoon Nanmadol is expected to move close to Okinawa Prefecture and the Amami region of Kagoshima Prefecture on Saturday and the southern Kyushu region on Sunday.
