Malaysia: Security Council veto power remains a conundrum, abolishing it the best way forward

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s call at the recent United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that the veto powers of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) be abolished is the way forward in ensuring the United Nations (UN) return to its foundation.

Critics have described the veto as being the most undemocratic element of the UN, and the main cause of inaction on war crimes and crimes against humanity like seen in the protracted conflicts and crises in the world such as in Palestine, Myanmar and Ukraine.

China, Malaysia economic and trade cooperation reach new highs

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 (NNN-Bernama) — Economic and trade cooperation between China and Malaysia have hit new highs, with bilateral trade volume for the first eight months of this year reaching US$131.2 billion.

China’s Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing said this constitute an increase of 21.2 per cent year-on-year. 

Malaysia’s palm products export for January-June 2022 reaches US$15.6 bln

MIRI (Malaysia), Sept 20 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia’s palm products export revenue increased significantly for the first six months of this year, totalling 14.05 million tonnes with a value of RM71.02 billion (US$15.6 billion) recorded during the period.

Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Willie Mongin said in the same period last year, the export of the product was recorded at 11.54 million tonnes with a value of RM45.75 billion (US$10 billion).

Malaysia Reported 1,639 New COVID-19 Infections, Four New Deaths

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysia reported 1,639 new COVID-19 infections, as of midnight, bringing the country’s national total to 4,818,890, according to the health ministry.

There are nine new imported cases, with 1,630 cases being local transmissions, data released on the ministry’s website showed.

Another four deaths have been reported, pushing the death toll to 36,312.

The ministry reported 2,056 new recoveries, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 4,756,967.

Malaysia Reported 1,977 New COVID-19 Infections, Six New Deaths

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysia reported 1,977 new COVID-19 infections, as of midnight, bringing the national total to 4,815,679, according to the health ministry.

There are two new imported cases and 1,975 local cases, data released on the ministry’s website showed.

Another six deaths have been reported, pushing the death toll to 36,305.

The ministry reported 2,018 new recoveries, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 4,752,216.

Malaysia-China trade expected to hit record high this year

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (NNN-Bernama) — The two-way trade between Malaysia and China is expected to hit a new record high this year with the implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement, said Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Lim Ban Hong.

Lim said the trade is expected to grow despite the pandemic’s effects and the global uncertainty caused by geopolitical tensions.

Malaysian ringgit hits record low vs US dollar since Asian Financial Crisis

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 (NNN-Bernama) — The Malaysian ringgit continued to weaken against the US dollar, breaching the 4.53 level which is by far the lowest since the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC), said an analyst.

At 6 pm, the local currency dipped to 4.5340/5365 against the greenback from 4.5265/5285 at Wednesday’s close.

The analyst said with no new catalyst to boost the ringgit’s attraction, investors are keeping their focus mainly on the greenback and other safe-haven assets.

Inflation, supply disruptions top risks for emerging Asia over next 12-18 months — Moody’s

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 (NNN-Bernama) — Inflation and supply chain disruptions are deemed the biggest risks over the next 12-18 months in Emerging Asia (EA), but Southeast Asian economies will increasingly benefit from supply chain diversification, according to Moody’s Investors Service.

Moody’s senior vice-president Jacintha Poh said given the supply chain disruptions, multinational corporations (MNCs) have indicated a rising intention to relocate more manufacturing away from China.

29 Malaysian duped by fake job offers in Cambodia to be brought home from end-Sept

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 13 (NNN-Bernama) — Twenty-nine Malaysians who were victims of fake job scams in Cambodia will be brought back to Malaysia in stages beginning end-September.

They are currently being detained by the immigration authorities in Cambodia.

Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim said the whole process would take up to October.

Malaysia’s Palm Oil Stocks Rose To 2.09 Million Tonnes In Aug

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysia’s palm oil stocks rose 18.16 percent from the previous month to 2.09 million tonnes in Aug, official data showed today.

According to the Malaysian Palm Oil Board, the world’s second largest palm oil producer, saw its crude palm oil production grow 9.67 percent month on month, to 1.73 million tonnes in Aug.

Palm oil exports slipped 1.94 percent month on month to 1.3 million tonnes in the same month.
