KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Malaysia has moved up 10 notches to the 51st spot among 180 countries in the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index for 2019.

Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) president Dr Muhammad Mohan said Malaysia’s score also improved to 53 out of 100 points on the CPI survey, an improvement from the 47 points it obtained the previous year. 

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (Bernama) — Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today told the High Court here that it would be difficult for the defence to get a member of the Saudi royal family to testify about the RM2.6 billion donation, which he had purportedly received between 2011 and 2014.

The 67-year-old former prime minister said this during cross-examination by deputy public prosecutor Datuk V.Sithambaram if any member of the royal family would be called to court to confirm the matter.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Gadek assemblyman G. Saminathan pleaded not guilty in the High Court here today to a charge with giving support to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorist group via his Facebook account.

Saminathan, 35, made the plea after the charge was read to him in Tamil before Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin.

Shipments of unwanted rubbish have been rerouted to Southeast Asia since China banned the import of plastic waste in 2018, but Malaysia and other developing countries are fighting back.

LANGKAWI, Malaysia, Jan 20 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The launching of the 5G Demonstration Projects (5GDP) here Sunday night is an important milestone as Malaysia moves a step closer towards implementing 5G in the near future, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

He said 72 use cases were being demonstrated across 56 5G live sites in six states and added that in Langkawi alone, there were 35 use cases at 25 live sites.

However, the International Trade and Industry Minister did not discount the possibility of an encounter with officials from India during the event which may lead up to a discussion on matters concerning bilateral interests.

Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin said another 110 containers are expected to be sent back by the middle of this year.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 (NNN-BERNAMA)  — Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said nothing can be gained from war just like what was shown by America’s involvement in the Vietnam War.

He noted that being the world’s most powerful military power today, America has the capacity to wipe off the whole of humanity if it chooses to do so, but the Americans must remember the outcome of the Vietnam War.

Dr Mahathir said the great power, employing all its military might, all its technology and huge sums of money was defeated by the Vietnamese.

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 15 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Saudi Arabia on Tuesday presented compensation to the families of seven Malaysian pilgrims who were killed when a crane collapsed onto the Grand Mosque in Makkah during the 2015 haj season.

The compensation of SAR 1 million (equivalent to RM1.17 million) for each family of the victims is a personal contribution from King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Apart from the families of the deceased victims, three Malaysian haj pilgrims who were injured in the incident also received compensation of SAR500,000 (RM587,574) each.
