KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Discussions to set up an English language channel – proposed by Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia to counter Islamophobia – have begun, with a technical meeting held between Pakistan and Turkey.

Turkish Ambassador to Malaysia Merve Safa Kavakci said Turkey’s Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun had led a delegation to a meeting with Pakistani representatives on the matter last week. 

Kuala Lumpur, Oct 7 (AFP) Malaysian authorities have imposed fines of around USD 100 million on 80 entities, intensifying their pursuit of people allegedly linked to the massive 1MDB corruption scandal, the anti-graft chief said Monday.

The fines are linked to a wide-ranging probe into billions of dollars that were looted from state investment fund 1MDB between 2009 and 2014, and spent on everything from yachts to expensive artwork, in a fraud allegedly involving the former prime minister.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The German community in Malaysia marked the 30th anniversary of its Unity Day with a grand dinner hosted by the country’s ambassador to Malaysia Nikolaus Graf Lambsdorff at a hotel here Thursday evening.

Also known as the National Day, the Day of German Unity is celebrated on October 3 every year to commemorate the unification of east and west Germany following the historic fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

The day also marked the 70th anniversary of the republic’s Constitution, famously known as the Grundgesetz or the Basic Law.

Several netizens, who seemed to be Indian nationals, expressed their disappointment through #BoycottMalaysia over the remark that Kashmir had been “invaded and occupied”.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysia’s leading index has signalled a brighter economic outlook in Nov, 2019, until Jan, 2020, according to official data released today (Wednesday).

Malaysian Statistics Department, said, the leading index that signals the direction of economic movements surged 1.4 percent to 119.3 points in July, from 117.6 points in the previous month, showing the economy will enter the expansion phase.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The 5G trials launched in Putrajaya and Cyberjaya last April are to be expanded nationwide, with the 5G demonstration projects around the country set to begin next month, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said today.

“It is hoped that Malaysia’s early commitment to 5G, to rapidly deploy 5G test beds and nationwide demonstration projects, will position the country  as one  of the leaders of 5G adoption in the world,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR/JAKARTA, Sept 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Thousands of schools have been ordered closed across Malaysia and Indonesia on Thursday, affecting at least 1.7 million students, officials said, as toxic haze from rampant forest fires sent air quality plummeting.

Nearly 2,500 schools were ordered to suspend classes in Malaysia — including nearly 300 in the smog-hit capital of Kuala Lumpur — over soaring health concerns sparked by toxic haze from out-of-control blazes in Indonesia’s Sumatra and Borneo islands.

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 19 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The government has agreed to implement the use of body cameras on law enforcement officers such as police, immigration and customs to overcome issues of misconduct, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

He said the proposal for the use of the body cameras was accepted as there have been various allegations of misconduct by officers on duty, such as beating the person being investigated.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Fitch Solutions Macro Research today (Wednesday), forecast China’s and India’s import demand to remain strong over the coming months, which will continue to support global palm oil prices.

The research house said that, it maintained its forecast for palm oil price to average 2,150 ringgit (about 514 U.S. dollars) per tonne this year, which was slightly lower than 2,300 ringgit per tonne in 2018, as it believed palm oil price would remain supported around current levels over the remainder of 2019.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Ten thousand Yemeni citizens holding social visit pass in Malaysia would be able to work under certain requirements which would be finalised soon, said Yemen’s Ambassador to Malaysia Dr Adel Mohamed BaHamid.

The envoy said this is part of the programmes held in collaboration with the Malaysian government to render humanitarian assistance to Yemenis, whose home country is ravaged by war.
