KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Hundreds of schools were closed in Malaysia’s Sarawak state, after air quality dropped, due to the ongoing haze, the state Education Department said today (Tuesday).

The closures include 347 primary and 62 secondary schools in nine districts, which serve over 150,000 students, the department said, in a statement.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said the government is committed to rehabilitating the country and liberating it from corruption and abuse of power.

He said this was being done by strengthening the country’s administration based on the Rule of Law principle and separation of powers as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 (NNN-BERNAMA) – China has proposed a collaboration in areas of technology exchange as well as halal products and services with Malaysia during discussions about potential collaboration in the area of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and startups.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 (NNN-BERNAMA) - Former special officer to Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was very surprised when told that he had US$884,996.78 in his BSI Switzerland account in early 2016 but he had never used the money and did not know its status until now because it was managed by fugitive businessman, Low Taek Jho also known as Jho Low.

Datuk Amhari Efendi Nazaruddin, 43, when reading his witness statement said he had received a call from BSI Switzerland where a BSI officer had asked if he knew the balance in his account.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, will make a three-day official visit to Russia, for the 5th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF 2019), in Russia’s Vladivostok, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said today (Wednesday).

Mahathir will be in the country between Wednesday and Friday, accompanied by several members of his cabinet, the ministry said in a statement.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Iran’s economy continues to be resilient despite facing various crippling sanctions from the United States (US), said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Zarif, who was in Malaysia for a one-day visit, said Iran managed to weather the sanctions by undertaking specific programmes and relying on its resources.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak’s second corruption trial started Wednesday, with a prosecutor alleging he pilfered billions of dollars from the 1MDB state investment fund through an “elaborate charade” and then sought to cover his tracks.

Chief prosecutor Gopal Sri Ram said in his opening remarks that the prosecution would show how Najib took steps to channel 1MDB money into his accounts using a “circuitous route” to prevent detection of the source of the funds and then later pretending that the fund was donated by an Arab prince.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has not ruled out the possibility that the recent network failure, which resulted in a systems disruption at the KL International Airport, was caused by an act of malicious intent.

“Nevertheless, we will put this in the hands of the authorities to do a full investigation on the matter,” the airport operator said in a statement today.

It also said the network was “stabilising well.” 

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Former Malaysian prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is facing seven charges of misappropriation of RM42 million in SRC International Sdn Bhd funds, will know his fate on Nov 11.

On that day, High Court Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, who presided over the trial, will make a decision whether to call Najib to enter his defence or to acquit him from the charges.
