Vietnam PM urges Trump to take objective view in trade dispute

HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnam’s prime minister said on Monday the country’s exchange rate policy was not aimed at helping its exports and asked that U.S. President Donald Trump have “a more objective assessment of the reality in Vietnam”.

The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) said earlier this month that under Trump’s direction, it was opening an investigation into whether Vietnam has been undervaluing its dong currency and harming U.S. commerce.

22 military personnel found dead in landslide in central Vietnam

HANOI, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- The bodies of all 22 military personnel who were buried by a landslide in central Vietnam's Quang Tri Province have been found, Vietnam News Agency reported on Monday.

Early on Sunday, their base in the province's mountainous Huong Hoa District was engulfed by a landslide caused by continuous downpours in the region.

The accident marked the second time in the past few days that military personnel suffered from landslides.

3 Vietnamese military personnel dead, 19 missing in landslide

HANOI, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- A landslide triggered by prolonged downpours has left three military personnel dead and 19 missing in central Vietnam's Quang Tri Province on Sunday, Vietnam News Agency reported.

The incident occurred early Sunday when the landslide engulfed a military base in Quang Tri's Huong Hoa mountainous district.

Three bodies had been found as of 10 a.m. local time, according to the news agency, with further search and rescue underway.

Floods, rough seas kill 18 in Vietnam as fresh storm on the way

HANOI, Oct 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least 18 people died and more than a dozen are missing after floods submerged homes in central Vietnam and rough seas capsized fishing boats, authorities said as another storm threatened fresh downpours.

Images on state media showed entire villages under water in Quang Tri and Quang Nam, while murky floodwaters swept through the Imperial City of Hue and the tourist hotspot Hoi An over the weekend.

Vietnam says China military drills could harm maritime code talks

HANOI, Oct 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Vietnam said that military drills conducted this week by Beijing in the South China Sea will hurt negotiations on a regional maritime code of conduct (COC) for the disputed waters.

The exercises could complicate efforts to restart talks on a long-awaited code between China and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang told a regular briefing.

Vietnam Arrests Three Drug Traffickers, Seizes 20 Heroin Cakes

HANOI, Sept 29 (NNN-VNA) – Police and border guards of northern Vietnam’s Son La province, detained three local people for trafficking 20 cakes of heroin and 2,362 pills of synthetic drugs, local media reported today.

The authorities made the arrest on Sunday, after one of the suspects escaped into the jungle, local media reported, adding that, they bought the drugs in the border area, and attempted to resell them in other localities.

Further investigation is underway.

Essex lorry deaths: Four people jailed in Vietnam

HANOI/LONDON, Sept 16 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Four people have been jailed in Vietnam for their roles in the death of 39 migrants found in a lorry in England’s Essex.

The men, women and children were discovered in a refrigerated trailer in Grays on Oct 23.

The four defendants were found guilty of “organising, brokering illegal emigration” after a one-day trial in Ha Tinh, VnExpress reported.

The state media outlet said one victim paid $22,000 for the illegal journey.

China, ASEAN, other regional countries to step up cooperation in post-pandemic recovery

HANOI, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Foreign ministers of China, member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other regional countries agreed to further strengthen cooperation in economic recovery in the post-COVID-19 era during the 53rd ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related meetings which wrapped up here Saturday.

As COVID-19 response and post-pandemic recovery took up a bulk of the meetings' topics, China, the ASEAN member countries and other regional countries repeatedly stressed the importance of joint efforts in effectively addressing the issue.
