Majority of 39 UK truck victims likely from Vietnam - priest

YEN THANH, Vietnam (Reuters) - The majority of the 39 people found dead in the back of a truck near London were likely from Vietnam, a community leader from the rural, rice-growing community where many of the victims are believed to have come from told Reuters on Saturday.

The discovery of the bodies - 38 adults and one teenager - was made on Wednesday after emergency services were alerted to people in a truck container on an industrial site in Grays, about 32km (20 miles) east of central London.

Vietnam rolls out red carpet for Dr Mahathir

HANOI, Aug 27 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Vietnam rolled out the red carpet to welcome visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his three-day official visit to the socialist republic Tuesday.

Dr Mahathir was accorded an official welcome at the Presidential Palace where he was greeted on arrival by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

Dr Mahathir inspected the guard of honour before the national anthems of Malaysia and Vietnam were played. 

US concerned over China’s ‘interference’ in South China Sea

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — The United States said it’s concerned by reports of China’s interference with oil and gas activities in the disputed waters of the South China Sea, where Vietnam accuses Beijing of violating its sovereignty.

State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement that China’s “repeated provocative actions aimed at the offshore oil and gas development of other claimant states threaten regional energy security and undermine the free and open Indo-Pacific energy market.”

Vietnam, European Union sign free trade agreement

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Vietnam and the European Union signed a free trade agreement on Sunday, opening opportunities to further boost trade between the euro bloc and one of Southeast Asia’s biggest manufacturing nations.

The agreement, which was signed by European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmstrom and Vietnamese Trade Minister Tran Tuan Anh in Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, will eliminate almost all tariffs for goods traded between Vietnam and the EU’s 28 member countries.

Vietnam seizes 5.3 tons of smuggled pangolin scales

HO CHI MINH CITY, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Vietnamese relevant forces have detected nearly 5.3 tons of smuggled pangolin scales in southern Ba Ria Vung Tau province which were sent from Nigeria, local media reported on Friday.

The scales were found in 151 bags in two containers, which were registered as carrying cashew nuts and arrived at Cai Mep International Terminal on Wednesday, online newspaper Tai Nguyen & Moi Truong (Resources & Environment) reported.

Vietnamese arrested for transporting drugs from Cambodia

HO CHI MINH CITY, May 12 (Xinhua): Police and border guards of Vietnam’s southern Long An province on Sunday arrested a local man for transporting 57 kg of crystal meth and nearly seven kg of heroin from Cambodia to Vietnam, local online newspaper VnExpress reported.

The drug trafficker is Truong Quoc Cuong, 41, from Long An. Cuong confessed that he had engaged in cross-border drug transport.

Vietnam, Myanmar to expand cooperation in defense, anti-crime

HANOI, May 11 (Xinhua): Vietnam and Myanmar agreed here on Saturday to expand cooperation to potential spheres, including navy, military medicine, defense industry, logistics, search and rescue, and fighting crimes related to national and regional security.

The consensus was reached in Hanoi on Saturday when Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with Myanmar President U Win Myint, who is in Vietnam to attend the United Nations Day of Vesak celebration, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Vietnam, Brunei upgrade relations to comprehensive partnership

HANOI, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam and Brunei decided here Wednesday to upgrade their bilateral relations to the comprehensive partnership.

The decision was made at the meeting between General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President Nguyen Phu Trong and visiting Sultan of Brunei Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
