IOC threatens to cut fuel supply to Air India

Mumbai, Jul 15 (PTI) State-owned Air India's flights services are likely to be hit partially as public sector oil marketing firm Indian Oil Corporation has threatened to cut fuel supply at some of the airports from Tuesday evening on non-payment of bills, according to a source.

The disinvestment-bound carrier, which is incurring Rs 15 crore loss per day, has huge dues towards oil companies and Airports Authority of India, among others.

India: Exports dip 9.71 pc after gap of eight months

New Delhi, Jul 15 (PTI) India's exports have entered negative zone after a gap of eight months recording a decline of 9.71 per cent to USD 25.01 billion in June, according to the government data.

Imports also declined 9 per cent to USD 40.29 billion in June mainly due to falling prices of petroleum products, leaving a trade deficit of USD 15.28 billion.

It was USD 16.6 billion in June last year. Last time it was in September 2018, when exports contracted by 2.15 per cent.

India: VBA offers 40 seats to Congress for Maha poll alliance

Mumbai, Jul 15 (PTI) Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) has offered 40 out of total 288 seats to the crisis-hit Congress if it wanted to enter into an alliance for the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra.

Announcing that the VBA, which also comprises AIMIM, is ready to contest all 288 constituencies, Ambedkar said the Congress has become rudderless.

India: Protest march in Nashik against lynching incidents

Nashik, Jul 15 (PTI) Hundreds of people from the Muslim community Monday held a protest march in Nashik in Maharashtra against recent mob-lynching incidents across the country.

The march, organised by the Bahujan Muslim Sangharsh Samiti, started from Chowk Mandai area of Old Nashik and culminated at the Idgah Maidan, organisers said.

The protesters demanded that such cases be tried in fast-track courts, the guilty be given death or life imprisonment, and the kin of victims be given financial aid of up to Rs 50 lakh.

India: Blunt talk needed, cites his spat with Sikka: Narayana Murthy

Mumbai, Jul 13 (PTI) Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy said Saturday that looking at "what is happening in different parts of the country today", the youth need to state bluntly that this was not the country for which our forefathers got freedom.

Talking about his spat with Vishal Sikka, Infosys' first non-promoter chief executive who quit in 2017, he said he had to speak up when he saw core values of the IT giant being thrown into the "dustbin".

India: Balasaheb Thorat appointed Cong's Maharashtra chief

New Delhi, Jul 13 (PTI) Balasaheb Thorat was Saturday appointed president of the Congress's Maharashtra unit.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reconstituted the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee and also appointed five working presidents -- Nitin Raut, Baswaraj M Patil, Vishwajeet Kadam, Yashomati Chandrakant Thakur and Muzaffer Hussain.

"Congress president has approved the proposal of appointment of Balasaheb Thorat as president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee," a communication from AICC general secretary organisation K C Venugopal said.

India: Man, son held for raping teenage relative

Palghar, Jul 13 (PTI) A 55-year-old man and his 19-year-old son were arrested Saturday for allegedly raping and making pregnant their 17-year-old relative in Vasai in Palghar district of Maharashtra, police said.

According to police, the victim girl has been staying with the accused, a resident of Jambulpada, because her father is an alcoholic.

The accused allegedly sexually assaulted the girl, a student of class 8, between January and June this year, a Valiv police station official said.

India: 14 rebel Karnataka MLAs return to Mumbai hotel

Mumbai, Jul 11 (PTI) Fourteen rebel MLAs from Karnataka returned to a luxury hotel here Thursday evening after submitting their resignations to the Assembly Speaker in Bengaluru, a local BJP leader said.

The MLAs have returned to the Renaissance hotel in suburban Powai and they would be staying there for another two days, the leader said.

India: BJP "strangulating" democracy, says Cong leader Chavan

Mumbai, Jul 10 (PTI) The Congress in Maharashtra Wednesday accused the BJP of attempting to destablise the democratically elected government in Karnataka, where over a dozen MLAs of the ruling combine have resigned.

Maharashtra Congress president Ashok Chavan said what was happening in the southern state was detrimental for democracy in the country.

Another party leader Satyajit Tambe said the Mumbai police were planning to send Karnataka minister D K Shivakumar, who is in the city to meet rebels MLAs, back to Bengaluru.
