India: Man gets 10 years' RI for sexually assaulting minor

Mumbai, May 2 (PTI) A Mumbai court Thursday sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl in his neighbourhood.

The 42-year-old man was found guilty under IPC section 376 (rape) as well as under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act by special judge Bharti Kale.

Indian EC asks MNS to give details of expenses of Raj's rallies

Mumbai, May 2 (PTI) The Election Commission has asked the MNS to submit details of expenses incurred on its president Raj Thackeray's election rallies, an official said Thursday.

Though the MNS is not contesting the Lok Sabha elections, Thackeray held at least ten rallies in Maharashtra last month, attacking the BJP governments at the Centre and the state and asking people not to vote for the saffron party.

India: No intelligence inputs on Naxal terror attack in Gadchiroli

Gadchiroli, May 2 (PTI) Maharashtra Director General of Police Subodh Jaiswal Thursday denied that there was any intelligence input regarding the Naxal attack in Gadchiroli district in which 16 persons including 15 policemen were killed Wednesday.

He, however, admitted that there were some lapses in operational procedures which led to the tragedy.

To a question by reporters here, he said the IED blast that killed the policemen and a civilian driver could be the handiwork of Korchi and Kurkheda Dalams of the Naxals operating in the area.

India: 15 security personnel, 1 civilian killed in Naxal terror blast

Mumbai, May 1 (PTI) At least 16 persons, including 15 security personnel, were killed in an IED blast triggered by Naxals in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district Wednesday, police said

The blast followed Naxals torching 25 vehicles belonging to a road construction contractor earlier in the day, police said

Those killed were members of the Quick Response Team (QRT) of Gadchiroli police, which was on way to inspect the torched vehicles, an official said.

The blast took place as the vehicle reached Lendhari nallah in Kurkheda area, the official said

Indian Polls: Dog with BJP flag detained for violating model code of conduct

A dog was found roaming around with BJP flag tied to its neck, and stickers with slogans “Modi Lao, Desh Bachao” (vote for Modi, save the country) on Phase 4 election day in Nandurbar town, Maharstra.

As campaign during the day of polling is illegal, someone reported the incident to local police.

Voters should get paid leave on polling day: EC official

Mumbai, Apr 28 (PTI) Voters working in the private sector should get paid leave on polling day as it is a fundamental right and they should not face any restriction in exercising their franchise, said an Election Commission official Sunday.

Seventeen Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra, including six in Mumbai, will go to polls on Monday.

India: Jet Airways employee commits suicide

Mumbai, Apr 27 (PTI) A senior technician with Jet Airways allegedly committed suicide in Maharashtra's Palghar district due to depression as he was suffering from cancer, police said Saturday.

Shailesh Singh (45) jumped off the terrace of his four-storeyed building in Nalasopara East on Friday afternoon, an official said.

As per functionaries of Jet Airways Staff and Employees Association, however, Singh was facing "financial constraints" as employees of the grounded airline have not got salaries for a long time.

Indian Polls: Gadkari faints during campaign rally

Shirdi (Maha), Apr 27 (PTI) Union minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari fainted on stage Saturday evening during an election rally near Shirdi in Maharashtra.

He soon recovered and later walked to his car.

Gadkari was campaigning at Rahata near here for Shiv Sena candidate from Shirdi Lok Sabha seat Sadashiv Lokhande.

After finishing his speech, Gadkari fainted while walking back to his seat on the stage.

Withdraw Pragya's ticket if PM truly respects police: Deora

Mumbai, Apr 27 (PTI) Mumbai Congress president Milind Deora has said if Prime Minister Narendra Modi truly respects the Maharashtra Police, he should withdraw the candidature of Malegaon blast accused Pragya Singh Thakur, who is contesting as a BJP nominee from Bhopal Lok Sabha constituency.

Deora also said that Modi's focus on emotive issues, rather than the real ones, during his speech in Mumbai on Friday is a clear indicator of the "failure" of his government in delivering on key issues, like employment.
