India: Naxals torch road-building equipment in Gadchiroli

Mumbai, May 13 (PTI) Naxals torched a water tanker and two other road construction machines at a site of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in Etapalli in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, police said Monday.

The incident, at a road-construction site between Emli and Mangutha, took place Sunday night, a Burgi police station official said, adding that a group of around 40 uniformed- Maoists were involved.

India: Woman raped at hospital in Mumbai

Mumbai, May 14 (PTI) A 37-year-old woman was allegedly raped at a civic-run hospital here by a man on the pretext of helping her fill a fee concession form, a police official said on Tuesday.

The accused, Deepak Annappa Kunchukurve, 31, a resident of Dharavi area here, has been arrested, he said.

The alleged incident took place last Friday on the fifth floor of the Sion Hospital building, he said.

India: Two held for molesting woman cyclist

Mumbai, May 12 (PTI) Two men were Sunday arrested for allegedly molesting a woman cyclist at Worli here, police said.

The incident had occurred in the wee hours of Saturday, when the woman was on her way to Haji Ali, an official said.

"The accused, who were going on a motorcycle, had touched the cyclist inappropriately and even went ahead smiling at her," he said.

India: Two SpiceJet Boeing flights suffer mid-air glitches

Mumbai, May 11 (PTI) Two of the SpiceJet's Boeing passenger planes- one from Mumbai and other from Bengaluru- suffered mid-air technical glitches, forcing their pilots to terminate journeys with one flight landing back in Mumbai and second diverted to Nagpur Saturday.

SpiceJet flight SG-611, which departed from Mumbai's Chhatrapapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport for Chennai around 7.30 am, returned to the city airport due to a mid-air technical glitch after being airborne for about 16 minutes, a source said.

India: Doctor gets bail in minor's molestation case

Mumbai, May 10 (PTI) A special court here has granted bail to an elderly doctor from suburban Bandra, accused of molesting his neighbour's 14-year-old daughter.

Special POCSO judge S J Gharat recently granted bail to the 63-year-old doctor, Kumar Ram Kanuga, in connection with the incident that took place nearly a month ago.

According to the prosecution, the victim had gone to the house of the accused, who has been practising medicine for the last 35 years, to collect the keys to her residence, which her mother had kept with him.

SBI books Rs 838 cr net income, says worst is behind

Mumbai, May 10 (PTI) Better asset quality and a 100 bps dip in credit cost helped the largest lender State Bank Friday report a net income of Rs 838 crore for the March quarter as against a net loss of Rs 7,718 crore a year ago, and also guide towards sunnier days.

For the full year to March, SBI, which controls a fourth of the nation's banking system, booked a net income of Rs 862 crore as against a net loss of Rs 6,547 crore. The management attributed the lower profit to the 100 percent provisions made for some key stressed accounts which are near the full resolution.

Etihad, a few others submit bids for Jet Airways

Mumbai, May 10 (PTI) State Bank, which leads the consortium of the lenders of Jet Airways Friday said they have received bids from Etihad Airways and a few unsolicited parties to take over the grounded airline.

The consortium of 26 lenders which now owns 51 percent in the airline, had invited expressions of interest between April 8 and 12 and had received four preliminary bids.

Friday was the last day to submit financial bids by the qualified bidders.

India: Woman alleges man raped her and chopped off hair

Thane, May 9 (PTI) A 23-year-old woman working in the film industry has alleged that a man raped her on the pretext of marriage and forcibly chopped off her hair after they had a fight during a visit to Goa, a police official said.

Based on the woman's complaint, the Thane police in Maharashtra on Wednesday booked the man, identified as Amit Shelar, a resident of Wangani area here, he said.

India: Man gets life sentence for killing wife, father-in-law

Mumbai, May 8 (PTI) A city court Wednesday awarded life sentence to a man for murdering his wife and father-in- law over monetary issue in 2013.

During his deposition, a police official said he was on patrol duty in October 2013 when he came to know about the double murder in Sakinaka area of suburban Andheri.

The official said when he reached the spot near a housing society, he found two bodies lying in a pool of blood.
