India: 8 more arrested by Maha CID in Palghar mob lynching case, total186 arrests

Mumbai, Oct 22 (PTI) The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Maharashtra Police on Thursday arrested eight more people in connection with thelynching of three persons by a mob in Palghar district in April this year, a police official said.

With this, 186 people have so far been arrested and 11 juveniles detained in connection with the incident.

After the arrest of 24 people on Wednesday, the police nabbed eight more persons on Thursday, the official said.

India: Court acquits 20 foreign attendees of Tablighi event

Mumbai, Oct 20 (PTI) A Mumbai court has aquitted 20 foreign attendees of a Tablighi Jamaat event who were booked by the city police for allegedly violating prohibitory orders during the coronavirus-enforced lockdown.

Metropolitan Magistrate (Andheri) R R Khan acquitted the 20 persons on Monday as the prosecution failed to prove the charges against them.

India: Maha will have take to take loan to help flood-hit people: Pawar

Mumbai, Oct 19 (PTI) NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Monday said Maharashtra is facing a "historic economic crisis" and the state government has no option but to take loan to help flood-affected people in the state.

Pawar, who is on a tour of the Marathwada region to review the flood situation, told reporters in Osmanabad that a state government cannot do anything alone in a crisis of such magnitude.

Last week, heavy rains and floods claimed at least 48 lives in Pune, Aurangabad and Konkan divisions, while crops on lakhs of hectares were damaged.

India: FIR registered against Kangana, her sister over tweets

Mumbai, Oct 17 (PTI) On the orders of a local court, Mumbai Police on Saturday registered an FIR against actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel for allegedly promoting enmity between different communities and other charges.

The Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate's court had ordered the police to investigate a complaint filed by Munawwar Ali Sayyed, a Bollywood casting director and fitness trainer, which referred to Ranaut's and her sister's tweets and other statements.

India: Man held for raping 12-year-old girl in Maha

Nagpur, Oct 17 (PTI) A man was arrested in Nagpur for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl after luring her to the cotton fields nearby, police said on Saturday.

The incident happened on Friday afternoon in Nilaj village when the girl and her brother were grazing goats, said a Khaparkheda police station official.

After the girl's kin filed a complaint, Manish Ravindra Choudhary (25) was held under provisions of IPC and POCSO Act, he said.

India: Arnab Goswami gets new date for appearance before police

Mumbai, Oct 16 (PTI) Following a request by his lawyer, Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami was exempted from appearing before Mumbai Police on Friday, an official said.

Goswami has been now asked to remain present before the Special Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Worli Division, on October 24, he said.

Earlier, the police had asked him to appear before the executive magistrate on Friday afternoon.

India: Shiv Sena asks Modi, Shah to recall Maharashtra governor

Mumbai, Oct 15 (PTI) Shiv Sena on Thursday said Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari should be recalled if Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah wish to preserve the "prestige" of Raj Bhavan.

An editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamana launched a stinging attack on Koshyari (78) who recently wrote to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on reopening places of worship and asked if the Sena leader had "suddenly turned secular."

Mumbai, Oct 13 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has informed Governor B S Koshyari that a decision on reopening places of religious worship will be taken after careful consideration of the COVID-19 situation in the state.

Responding to a letter by Koshyari a day earlier, Thackeray on Tuesday wrote to the Governor, saying the state government will consider his request to reopen these places.

In his letter, Koshyari had mentioned that he has received three representations from delegations demanding that places of religious worship be reopened.

India: Farmer ends life in Maha after harassment by money-lender

Aurangabad, Oct 13 (PTI) A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide in Maharashtra's Beed district after he was beaten up and harassed by a money-lender to re- pay the sum along with interest, police said on Tuesday.

The money-lender, Yuvarj Bahir, has been arrested, they said.

Farmer Gangaram Gawade (45) allegedly hanged himself from a tree near his residence in Rajuri (Navgan) village of Beed on Sunday, police sub-inspector Suresh Mali told PTI.

India: Man held for raping 12-year-old girl in Palghar

Palghar, Oct 9 (PTI) A man was arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year old girl in Mokhada area of Palghar district, police said on Friday.

The 30-year-old man, identified as contractor Deoram Bhoye, on Wednesday entered the latter's house in Talyachiwadi when she was alone and raped her, said an official.

"Her brother caught Bhoye red-handed and raised an alarm but he managed to escape. The family filed a complaint and after which he was arrested late Thursday night under IPC and POCSO provisions," the Mokhada police station official said.
