India: 160 migrants found traveling to UP in three trucks

Mumbai, May 7 (PTI) The Mumbai police on Thursday intercepted three trucks carrying 160 migrant labourers from the city to Utttar Pradesh, an official said.

Drivers of the three trucks and another person were boooked for violation of lockdown, said an official of the RAK Marg police station.

India: Man booked for kidnap, rape in Palghar

Palghar, May 8 (PTI) An offence was registered against a 19-year-old man for allegedly kidnapping and raping a girl from Mokhada village in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Friday.

The Palghar police on Thursday registered a case against the accused under sections 376 (rape), 363 (kidnapping) and other provisions of the Indian Penal Code, while no arrest has been made so far, public relations officer Hemant Katkar said.

India: Death of 16 migrants on rail track is 'murder'

Aurangabad, May 8 (PTI) Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel of All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) on Friday termed as "murder" the death of 16 migrant workers, who were run over by a goods train in Maharashtra.

He also demanded that criminal cases be filed against the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the Railway Ministry and the Maharashtra government for "ignoring the plight of thousands of stranded workers".

Air India unions challenge in HC pay cut due to pandemic

Mumbai, May 8 (PTI) Air India employee unions have moved the Bombay High Court against the airline's decision to slash allowances, which form a major part of salary, by ten per cent because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Air India Aircraft Engineers Association, All India Service Engineers Association and Indian Pilots Guild filed a writ petition in the high court earlier this week against the national carrier and its subsidiary Air India Engineering Services Ltd.

India train crushes migrant workers sleeping on track killing 14

NEW DELHI, May 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A train in India ran over migrant workers sleeping on the track on Friday, killing at least 14 of the group, who were apparently on their way to their home villages, the railway ministry and media said.

Tens of thousands of people have been walking home from India’s big cities after losing their jobs because of a lockdown to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus since late March.

New Delhi, May 7 (PTI) Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector is on the verge of collapse and urged major industries to release the outstanding dues to such companies within a month.

India: Maha Cong bears travel expenses of 4,627 migrant workers

Mumbai, May 7 (PTI) The Maharashtra Congress said it has borne the travel expenses of 4,627 migrant labourers who wished to return to their home states amid the COVID-19 lockdown.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi announced that the party's state unit had borne the travel cost of 4,627 migrant labourers, who wished to go to their home states from different parts of Maharashtra in the last two days, a release issued here on Thursday stated.

India: Police constable held in Rs 7 crore jewellery theft case

Mumbai, May 3 (PTI) A police constable has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the theft of ornaments worth Rs 7 crore from a jewellery shop in suburban Oshiwara here last month, an official said on Sunday.

The constable, Santosh Rathod, is attached to Oshiwara Police Station. Jewellery worth Rs 80 lakh was recovered from him, the official said.

India: 57-year-old Pune police ASI dies of coronavirus

Pune, May 4 (PTI) A 57-year-old assistant sub inspector of Pune police on Monday died of coronavirus infection in a private hospital, officials said.

He had tested positive for the virus in the last week of April and succumbed at around 1pm, Pune Joint Commissioner of Police Ravindra Shisave said.

A statement from Bharti Hospital where he was admitted said the ASI was suffering from obesity and hypertension and was on ventilator for 12 days.

The Joint CP said so far 12 Pune police personnel have tested positive for the virus.
