India: 10,000 people rendered homeless in Tripura flood

Agartala, Jul 14 (PTI) At least 10,000 people of two districts of Tripura were rendered homeless and forced to take shelter in relief camps following floods caused by incessant rain for the last two days, officials of the state revenue department said Sunday.

State Project Officer of Disaster Management, Sarat Das, said personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and secureity forces of the state rescued a number of stranded people from Khowai and West Tripura districts.

India: Suspected cattle lifter lynched in Tripura

Agartala, July 3 (PTI) A suspected cattle lifter was lynched in a remote tribal hamlet near the Indo-Bangla border in Tripura's Dhalai district, a senior police officer said Wednesday.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Arindam Nath said a man was lynched by a group of villagers on suspicion of being a cattle lifter at Noarampara, under the jurisdiction of Raishyabari police station on Tuesday night.

India: Man arrested for Facebook post on Tripura CM

Agartala, Jun 14 (PTI) The Tripura Police has arrested a man from Delhi for allegedly posting "fake news" on Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb's personal life, a senior police officer said.

Based on specific inputs, Anupam Paul, who had been on the run since April 26, was arrested by the crime branch of Tripura Police on Wednesday.

After the arrest, he was produced before a Delhi court on Thursday seeking a transit remand for interrogation and investigation into the case. And, the plea was granted by the court.

India: MLA marries woman who had lodged rape case against him

Agartala, June 10 (PTI) MLA Dhananjoy Tripura of Tripura's ruling party IPFT has married a woman who had accused him of raping and deceiving her.

"Yes, I have married the woman at Chaturdas Devata temple in Agartala," Tripura told reporters here Monday.

The Indigenous People's Front of Triupura MLA's counsel Amit Debbarma said the legislator married the woman at Chaturdas Devta Temple on Sunday.

India: Mahila Cong worker accuses BJP of extortion

Agartala, Jun 3 (PTI) A Mahila Congress worker from South Chandrapur village here, filed a complaint with the East Agartala Police Station on Monday saying that she has received extortion notices along with many others in the locality.

"I am a Mahila Congress worker.My family and I are being constantly threatened and attacked after since the results of the parliamentary elections were announced. Today, a letter was found in my house. The BJP and its workers, through the letter, demanded Rs 20,000 from my family, as extortion money," Rupa Dey told reporters.

India: Ban on NLFT, ATTF to continue for five years

Agartala, May 11 (PTI) The ban on the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) will continue for five years, a notification of the Ministry of Home Affairs said.

The notification issued by the joint secretary to the department, Satyendra Garg, on May 9 which was made available here Saturday said, there is sufficient cause for declaring NLFT and ATTF as unlawful associations with effect from October 3, 2018 for a period of five years.

India: Suspected Rohingya refugees shifted to state-run shelter homes

Aizawl, May 8 (PTI) The twelve suspected Rohingya refugees, who were rescued three days ago here allegedly from a human trafficking gang, have been shifted to state-run shelter homes, a senior police officer said.

A group of eight women and four minor boys were apprehended from the house of a local woman in Aizawl on Sunday for residing in India without valid travel documents.

The woman, who had been hosting the group, told police that she provided them shelter as a favour to her cousin in Tahan, Myanmar.

Indian Polls: Cong delegn meets EC about BJP rigging in West Tripura

Agartala, Apr 29 (PTI) A Congress delegation met the full bench of the Election Commission in New Delhi and demanded fresh polling in West Tripura seat alleging large scale rigging by the ruling BJP, senior party leader said Tuesday.

Elections in West Tripura seat was held in the first phase on April 11.

Agartala, Apr 21 (PTI) The political turmoil in Tripura shows no sign of abating with opposition parties demanding fresh polls in Tripura West Lok Sabha constituency, claiming that the April 11 election in the state was "heavily rigged" by the ruling BJP.

Denying the charge, the saffron party said the allegations were "baseless and politically motivated".
