India: SC to hear plea challenging arrest of journalists for comments against UP CM

New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) The Supreme Court has agreed to hear on Tuesday a plea challenging the arrest of journalist Prashant Kanojia, who has been accused of making an objectionable comment against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on social media.

A vacation bench, comprising justices Indira Banerjee and Ajay Rastogi, Monday took note of the submission by a lawyer that the plea filed by the spouse of the arrested scribe needed urgent hearing as the arrest was "illegal" and "unconstitutional".

India: "Cabinet expansion will be 'foundation stone' for collapse of Karn govt"

Bengaluru, June 9 (PTI) Union Minister D V Sadananda Gowda Sunday said the much awaited expansion of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy led cabinet in Karnataka, aimed at saving the coalition government, would be the "foundation stone" for its collapse.

"I feel this expansion will be the foundation stone for the collapse of the government. Everyone knows about disgruntlement (in the coalition). I don't want to get involved in their internal fighting or issues," he told reporters in response to a question.

India: Tribal woman from Rajasthan raped in MP, dies

Kota (Rajasthan), Jun 9 (PTI) A 20-year-old tribal woman, who was allegedly raped and administered a poisonous substance by a youth in Madjya Pradesh, died at a hospital in Rajasthan's Baran district, police said Sunday.

Four women from the Rajasthan's Kanjar tribe had gone to Madhya Pradesh's Guna town to perform at a private programme on Friday, they said.

Two of them were taken by two youths to a forested area from the bus stand. One of the women was raped, police said.

Indian Editors Guild condemns arrest of journalists

New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI) The Editors Guild Sunday condemned the arrest of a journalist, and the editor and head of a television channel over alleged objectionable content related to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, describing the police action as an "authoritarian misuse of laws" and an effort to intimidate the press.

India: Vault of Daan-Ghati temple in Mathura sealed

Mathura (UP), Jun 9 (PTI) The vault (khajana ghar) of Daan-Ghati temple here has been sealed and security personnel deployed to guard its treasure on the orders of a court, officials said Sunday.

The authorities also installed CCTV cameras around the vault containing about two crore coins and valuables at the Daan-Ghati temple, which is one of the two main temples of Goverdhan Parikrama.

Sub-divisional magistrate Nagendra Singh executed the court orders in the presence of Deputy SP Kailash Chandra Pandey and Sri Giriraj Sevak Samiti Goverdhan Secretary Rama Kant Kaushik.

India: Minor raped, killed in Bhopal; 6 cops suspended; accused identified

Bhopal, June 9 (PTI) The body of an eight-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped, was found near a drain in Bhopal on Sunday, police said.

Preliminary investigations revealed she died of strangulation after being raped, an officer said.

Six police officials have been suspended for dereliction of duty and a reward of Rs 20,000 has been declared for providing information to nab the accused, officials said.

India: Boy held for sexually assaulting four-year-old girl

Jabalpur (MP), Jun 9 (PTI) A 16-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly having unnatural sex with a four-year- old girl here on Sunday, a police official said.

The incident occurred under Sihora police station area, about 40 kms from the district headquarters.

Sihora police station in-charge, Mahendra Singh Rajput, said the incident took place in the afternoon, when the boy found the girl playing outside her house.

"He took the girl to a vacant house and committed the act of unnatural sex," Rajput said.

India: Woman saves Muslim family from mob in Aligarh

Aligarh (UP), June 9 (PTI) Days after the killing of a two-year-old girl fuelled tension in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh district, a 24-year-old woman saved a Muslim family from getting attacked by a mob on Sunday, police said.

The incident occurred in Jattari area, over 40 km from here, when the family from Balabgarh, Haryana, was travelling in a van to attend an engagement. They were accompanied by a woman named Puja Chauhan, who was a close family friend, the police said.

India: Body of minor girl found in bushes in UP; FIR registered

Jalaun (UP), Jun 9 (PTI) Body of a 7-year-old girl was found in the bushes outside Bijbaha village in Uttar Pradesh Sunday, police said.

The incident comes close on the heels of the brutal murder of a toddler at Aligarh in the state.

Superintendent of Police Swami Prasad said the minor had gone missing on Saturday.

"The girl's body was spotted by the locals Sunday morning," he said.

A case has been registered against two persons following a complaint by the victim's father, Laakhan Singh, Prasad said.
