India: Corporator shot dead in UP

Jaunpur (UP), Feb 1 (PTI) Unidentified assailants shot dead a Nagar Palika corporator in Line Bazar police station area here late on Monday night, police said.

Bala Yadav (50) was shot dead by unidentified assailants who fled from the scene, CO (City) Jitendra Dube said.

Yadav was involved in plotting of land because of which he had rivalry with some people, the CO said, adding this could be the reason behind the murder.

India: Twitter account blocked over criticism of Gov

Kolkata, Feb 1 (PTI) Alleging that the NDA government is not open to criticism, CPI(M) leader Mohammed Salim on Monday said his Twitter account was suspended during the day, after he compared the Union Budget with a trading platform, and slammed the Centre over its handling of the farmers stir.

Salim told reporters that his account as well those of others were blocked temporarily, "at the behest of the IT department of the Centre".

India: Man sentenced to 10 years in jail for rape in UP

Banda (UP), Feb 2 (PTI) A court here has sentenced a man to 10 years imprisonment for raping his teenage cousin in 2016.

Additional District Session Court (POCSO) Judge Pawan Kumar Sharma on Monday also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on 26-year-old Lakhanlal.

The girl was raped on August 22, 2016. She was 13 years old then, Public Prosecutor Ramsufal Singh said.

He said a case was registered on August 25, 2016, at Girwan and Lakhanlal was arrested three days later.

India: Youth held for collecting money in name of PM's brother

Sultanpur (UP), Feb 2 (PTI) A youth was arrested for allegedly collecting money in the name of the prime minister's brother, police said on Tuesday.

Police had received information from the Prime Minister's Office that one Jitendra Tiwari alias Jitu was involved in forgery in the name of the PM's brother, Station House Officer, City police station, Bhupendra SIngh said.

India: Kerala's first human milk bank to be opened on Feb 5

Kochi, Feb 2 (PTI) Kerala's first Human Milk Bank (HMB), a state-of-art facility will be opened at the Ernakulam general hospital here on Friday by Health Minister K K Shailaja.

Set up with the support of the Rotary Club of Cochin Global, the milk bank is to ensure breast milk for new born babies, who are not being breastfed by their own mothers who may be sick, deceased or due to insufficient production of breast milk, in the hospital.

India: NRIs will soon be able to float one person companies

New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI) Seeking to further improve the ease of doing business, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said NRIs will be allowed to set up one person companies, definition of small companies will be revised and various provisions of the Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) Act will be decriminalised.

The proposed relaxations to rules governing One Person Companies (OPCs) are expected to benefit startups and innovators.

India: Self-immoltion bid outside UP Chief Minister's Office

Lucknow/Kannauj, Feb 1 (PTI) A man set himself on fire outside the Chief Minister's Office in Lucknow on Monday to draw the attention of the authorities to a land dispute case, police said.

Umashankar, 36, a resident of the Indragarh area in Kannauj district, suffered 30 per cent burns and undergoing treatment Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civil Hospital, they said.

India: Teen boy held in UP for raping minor cousin

Bulandshahr (UP), Feb 1 (PTI) A 16-year-old boy has been apprehended for allegedly raping his minor cousin in a village here, police said on Monday.

The accused has been kept in police custody, Senior Superintendent of Police Santosh Kumar Singh said.

The five-year-old girl lives with her mother in a village here as her father, who is a cab driver, works in Delhi.
