Canadian ambassador: Huawei exec could avoid US extradition

Toronto, Jan 24 (AP) Canada's ambassador to China said he thinks a top Chinese executive has a strong case to avoid extradition to the United States and said he hopes she will be released soon in remarks one of his predecessors called "mind-boggling."

Ambassador John McCallum told Chinese language media in Markham, Ontario, on Tuesday that Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou has "quite good arguments," including "political involvement by comments from Donald Trump on her case."

Chinese court sentences Canadian drug suspect to death

14 Jan 2019; DW: A Chinese court on Monday sentenced a Canadian man to death on drug trafficking charges after a retrial deemed his original 15-year prison sentence to be too lenient.

The Dalian court said Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, 36, who was detained in December 2014, played a "key part" in an international drug smuggling operation and was recruited to help smuggle more than 222 kilograms (488 pounds) of methamphetamine from a warehouse in Dalian city to Australia.

China ambassador accuses Canada and allies of racism

TORONTO (AP) — China’s ambassador to Canada accused the country Wednesday of “white supremacy” in calling for the release of two Canadians detained in China last month, while describing the detentions as an “act of self-defense.”

The arrests were in apparent retaliation for the arrest of a top Chinese tech executive in Canada.

But Ambassador Lu Shaye’s charged in op-ed in the Ottawa-based Hill Times that Western countries are employing a “double standard” in demanding the immediate release of the Canadians.

Turkish pizza maker lends hand to homeless in Canada

TORONTO, Canada; 24 Dec 2018; AA: A Turkish pizza maker living in Canada distributed food and winter clothing to the homeless.

Zeynel Ari, who became famous for his wood fire pizzeria in the city of Toronto, fed and provided the winter wear to the people living on the streets and in shelter homes.

Ari told Anadolu Agency that he has made it a tradition extending support to the homeless since 2016.

Canada, US call for 'immediate release' of two Canadians held by China

22 Dec 2018; AFP: Ottawa and Washington on Friday stepped up pressure on Beijing, calling for the immediate release of two Canadians detained in apparent retaliation for the arrest in Vancouver of a top Chinese tech executive on a US warrant.

The European Union also said it was backing Canada in the detentions dispute, in which Ottawa has been caught up in the rivalry between Beijing and Washington.

Huawei executive gets bail

12 Dec 2018; AFP: A Canadian court has granted bail to a top Chinese telecom company executive wanted in the United States, as diplomatic tensions turned to the detention of a former Canadian diplomat in Beijing.

Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei, was released on Can$10 million (US$7.5 million) bail on Tuesday in a case that has rattled relations between China, the United States and Canada.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — China raised the pressure on the United States and Canada as a bail hearing for a top Chinese technology executive resumed Monday in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei and daughter of its founder, was detained at the request of the U.S. during a layover at the Vancouver airport on Dec. 1 — the same day that Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping of China agreed to a 90-day cease-fire in a trade dispute that threatens to disrupt global commerce.

China warns Canada of “serious consequences” if Huawei CFO not released

China has warned of  serious consequences if Canada did not release Huawei CFO immidietly, calling the case “extremely nasty”.

Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s global chief financial officer, was arrested in Canada and faces extradition to the United States, for her company’s links to a firm that tried to sell equipment to Iran despite sanctions. Meng Wanzhou is the daughter of the founder of Huawei.
