India: Alka Lamba quits AAP, says she has joined Congress

New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI) Disgruntled AAP MLA Alka Lamba on Friday quit the party and announced that she has returned to the Congress.

Lamba, who resigned from the AAP's primary membership, said she met Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the evening and joined Congress.

"I stayed away from the Congress for six years but I always stood firm on its ideology. Today I have returned to the Congress. As a member of the Congress, I will work towards strengthening the party," she told reporters outside Gandhi's residence at 10, Janpath.

South Africa's T20 team arrives in India

New Delhi, Sep 7 (PTI) The Quinton de Kock-led South Africa team set foot on India on Saturday for the upcoming three-match T20 series.

"Excited to be back in India and looking forward to playing cricket again," pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada tweeted.

South Africa will start the tour with the T20 matches, the first of which is in Dharamsala on September 15 followed by Mohali (September 18) and Bengaluru (September 22).

India: Former JNU student leader Shehla Rashid booked on charges of sedition, etc.

The Delhi Police on Friday booked former JNU student leader Shehla Rashid on charges of sedition, promoting enmity and intentions to cause riots. Rashid has called the charge “frivolous, politically motivated and a pathetic attempt to silence” her.

According to Hindustan Times, FIR was filed against her on Tuesday based on a complaint by a Supreme Court lawyer, Alakh Alok Srivastava, against a series of her tweets.

India: SC seeks Centre's response on pleas challenging validity of amendments to UAPA

New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the Centre on petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the amendments made in the UAPA.

The petitions challenges the changes to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on various grounds, including that these infringed upon fundamental rights of citizens and empowered agencies to declare a person a terrorist.

India: Plea seeking live telecast or recording of Ayodhya case

New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Friday said a plea seeking live telecast or recording of the hearing in the Ayodhya land dispute case be listed before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.

A five-judge constitution bench headed by the CJI is hearing the Ayodhya land dispute case.

The plea, filed by former RSS ideologue K N Govindacharya seeking live streaming or recording of the Ayodhya case proceedings, came up before a bench of justices R F Nariman and Surya Kant.

Ambani rolls out JioFiber, offering minimum 100 Mpbs internet speed for Rs 699 a month

New Delhi, Sep 5 (PTI) Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Jio on Thursday announced launch of fiber-based broadband services, offering minimum internet speed of 100 Mbps for a monthly rental of Rs 699.

JioFiber will offer broadband internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps for Rs 8,499 per month, the company said in a statement.

The broadband service will offer unlimited data, free voice calling to anywhere in India as well as TV video calling/conferencing.

JNU sedition case: No decision on prosecution sanction against Kanhaiya, others yet, says Kejriwal

New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI) The Delhi government has not yet taken any decision on the prosecution sanction against former JNU Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar and others in the 2016 JNU sedition case, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Friday.

He, however, said the Delhi government's home department will take the appropriate decision after taking all facts into consideration.

There will be no political interference in the case, the chief minister asserted.

If attacked, India will give a befitting reply: Naidu

New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI) India has been acting with restraint despite "grave provocations" but if attacked will give a reply the aggressor will be unable to forget, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said on Friday, in a veiled warning to Pakistan.

He made the remarks after launching a compilation of 95 speeches delivered by President Ram Nath Kovind during his second year in office.

India: Mother Dairy hikes cow milk price by Rs 2/litre

New Delhi, Sep 5 (PTI) Leading milk supplier Mother Dairy has increased price of cow milk by Rs 2 to Rs 44 a litre in Delhi-NCR, with effect from Friday.

The retail price has been increased as the company is paying more to farmers for procuring raw milk.

However, there will be no increase in rates of other variants of milk.

Chidambaram sent to Tihar jail in INX Media corruption case

New Delhi, Sep 5 (PTI) Veteran Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram was sent to Tihar jail Thursday by a Delhi court where he will spend 14 days in judicial custody in connection with the INX Media corruption case.

Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar sent him to judicial custody till September 19.

The court allowed him to carry his medicines to jail and directed that he be kept in a separate cell in Tihar prison as he was a protectee under Z-security.
