Iran, Iraq begins construction of Shalamcheh-Basra railway

TEHRAN, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Iran and Iraq held a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday for a joint railway project near the common border in Iran's southwestern Khuzestan province, Iran's official news agency IRNA reported.

The event marks the start of construction of a railway that would span 32 km between Shalamcheh city in the Iranian province and the port of Basra in southern Iraq, said the report.

Qatar To Offer 30-Million-USD Fuel Aid To Lebanese Army

BEIRUT, Sept 1 (NNN-NNA) – Qatar announced yesterday that, it would supply the Lebanese army with fuel aid valued at 30 million U.S. dollars, over a period of six months.

Lebanese Army Commander, Joseph Aoun, thanked Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, for the generous donation, it reported.

Aoun said, the Lebanese army appreciated Qatar for standing by Lebanon’s military establishment and being committed to providing various forms of support to the military.

Iranian FM Arrived In Lebanon For Official Visit

BEIRUT, Sept 1 (NNN-NNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, arrived in Beirut yesterday, for an official visit to Lebanon, after wrapping up his tour in Syria.

Upon his arrival at the airport, the Iranian diplomat told the press that, his country called on the international community to help Lebanon, which has been mired in a major financial crisis and political impasse.

Saudi Army Units Arrived In Egypt For Multinational Military Drill

RIYADH, Sept 1 (NNN-SPA) – Saudi army units, arrived in Egypt yesterday, to participate in a multinational military drill.

The Bright Star military drill, which kicked off yesterday, on the Mohamed Naguib military base, at the Mediterranean Sea, will run until Sep 14, with the participation of 8,000 troops from 34 countries, according to a report from Egypt Daily News.

The exercise involves ground forces, infantry, artillery units, navy, air forces, and special operations forces, the Egyptian media outlet said.

African Union suspends Gabon's membership following military coup

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) Commission has suspended Gabon from the pan-African bloc until normal constitutional order is restored in the country following the latest military coup.

The decision to suspend Gabon from the AU membership was made by the Peace and Security Council of the AU Commission during its latest meeting on the situation in the Central African country, the AU said in a statement issued late Thursday.

Türkiye launches air strike against Kurdish militants in N. Iraq

ANKARA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye launched an air operation targeting "terrorists" in the Qandil and Asos regions of northern Iraq early on Friday, the country's Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The operation was carried out in the early morning to "neutralize" the terrorist elements of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and other Kurdish armed groups, said the statement.

Turkish authorities often use the term "neutralized" in their statements to imply the "terrorists" in question surrendered or were killed or captured.

UN criticises France for banning abaya in schools

30 August 2023; MEMO: The spokesperson for the United Nations’ Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) yesterday criticised France’s decision to ban girls from wearing the abaya (black loose fitting dress) in schools.

On Sunday, French Education Minister Gabriel Attal told the local TF1 TV channel that wearing the abaya will no longer be allowed in schools.

Citing a government source, the Shafaq News Agency reported today that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani is to visit the southern province of Basra where he will lay the foundation stone for the 36 kilometre railway project.

Iran weightlifter banned for life after shaking hands with Israel athlete

31 August 2023; MEMO: A veteran Iranian weightlifter has been banned for life for shaking hands with an Israeli opponent at the 2023 World Master Weightlifting Championships in Poland after winning a silver medal, Anadolu Agency reports.

Mostafa Rajaei, who is in his early 40s, was seen shaking hands and posing for photographs with Israeli weightlifter, Maksim Svirsky, during the competition after they both had a podium finish.
