Iraq: Thousands of protesters block traffic in Basra over delayed salaries

21 Dec 2020; MEMO: Thousands of protesters yesterday blocked several main roads leading to oil installations and bridges in oil-rich Basra in southern Iraq demanding the government to pay their delayed salaries.

Eyewitnesses said the protesters, who work as day-rate employees in government institutions including energy facilities, demonstrated in several areas in the province demanding the government pay their salaries which they have not received in months.

Rockets fired at U.S. embassy land inside Baghdad's Green Zone, damaging compound

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - At least eight Katyusha rockets landed in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone in an attack targeting the U.S. Embassy, causing some minor damage on the compound on Sunday, the Iraqi military and the embassy said on Sunday.

The Iraqi military said an “outlaw group” fired eight rockets. Most of the missiles hit a residential complex and a security checkpoint inside the zone, damaging buildings and cars and wounding one Iraqi soldier, a military statement said.

Tripartite move to support int'l peace conference on Palestinian issue

RAMALLAH, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian official said on Sunday that there is a joint Palestinian-Egyptian-Jordanian move to support holding an international peace conference to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The move came as a result of a consultative meeting held among the foreign ministers of the three countries in Cairo on Saturday in order to exchange their views on the Palestinian cause.

AU chairperson says Horn of Africa in "very particular situation," faces "tough challenges"

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said the Horn of Africa finds itself in "a very particular situation," as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), an East African bloc, is experiencing "tough challenges."

The chairperson of the 55-member pan-African bloc made the remarks during the 38th IGAD Extraordinary Meeting, which brought together east African leaders in the Red Sea nation Djibouti late Sunday.

UAE top diplomat acknowledges visa restrictions on Pakistan

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates’ top diplomat has publicly acknowledged a so-far unexplained ban on visitors from Pakistan, which travel agents say also targets tourists and laborers from a dozen Muslim-majority countries amid the pandemic and the UAE’s normalization of ties with Israel.

Iran extends coronavirus restrictions ahead of Yalda festival

19 Dec 2020; MEMO: Shop closures and traffic restrictions in Iran will begin earlier on Saturday in an effort to avert a resurgence of coronavirus infections and deaths as Iranians prepare for the Yalda Night winter festival, Reuters reports.

"Let's not gather, so we don't become fewer," President Hassan Rouhani said in televised remarks on Saturday, urging Iranians not to hold extended family gatherings on Yalda Night, or Shab-e Yalda.

Qatar unveils fourth 2022 World Cup stadium

19 Dec 2020; MEMO: Qatar inaugurated the fourth of eight 2022 World Cup venues, the Al Rayyan Stadium, when the country hosted the Amir Cup final between Al-Sadd and Al-Arabi on Friday, Reuters reports.

Al-Sadd, coached by former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez, beat Al-Arabi 2-1 to lift their 17th Amir Cup title after Algeria forward Baghdad Bounedjah scored twice.

"It is a wonderful football stadium," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement.

Iraqi PM Warns Of Collapse Of State Without Financial Reform

BAGHDAD, Dec 20 (NNN-NINA) – Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, warned of the collapse of social and political systems in Iraq, and overwhelming chaos, if the country does not go through financial reform.

Al-Kadhimi made his comments during an extraordinary session of the Iraqi cabinet, to discuss the federal budget for the fiscal year 2021, which came after the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) decided to devalue the national currency, due to the economic crisis that resulted from the decline in oil prices.
