Crisis hits Lebanon’s hospitals, among the best in Mideast

BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanon’s hospitals, long considered among the best in the Middle East, are cracking under the country’s financial crisis, struggling to pay staff, keep equipment running or even stay open amid a surge in coronavirus cases.

Private hospitals, the engine of the health system, warn they may have to shut down. Chronically underfunded public hospitals, which have led the fight against the virus, fear they will be overrun.

Lebanon court orders seizure of central bank governor’s assets

21 July 2020; MEMO: A Lebanese court has issued a decision to freeze the assets of central bank governor, Riyad Salameh.

Judge Faisal Makki issued the order, which came into effect immediately, yesterday and stipulated the seizure of Salameh’s movable and immovable assets, including his home in Beirut’s Rabieh area and personal car.

Egypt jails 42 protesters whose homes were demolished

On Friday, as residents of Maawa Al-Sayadeen took to the streets, security forces fired tear gas at them and attacked them with batons, killing a four-day-old girl.

More Than 240 Illegal Immigrants Rescued Off Libyan Coast

TRIPOLI, July 21 (NNN-XINHUA) – The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), said Monday, that, more than 240 illegal immigrants were rescued off the Libyan coast in the past week.

On July 13-20, “243 migrants were intercepted at sea and returned to Libya,” IOM said.

IOM mentioned that a total of 6,119 illegal immigrants have been rescued off the Libyan coast and returned to Libya this year, while 9,225 illegal immigrants were rescued and returned to Libya last year.

Egyptian, U.S. Presidents Discuss Latest Developments In War-Torn Libya

CAIRO, July 21 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, and his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, discussed during a phone conversation on Monday, recent developments in war-torn Libya.

During the phone call, Sisi stressed Egypt’s strategic stance towards the Libyan issue, which aims at “preserving the country’s national institutions and preventing further deterioration of the security conditions, by illegal foreign interventions,” Egyptian Presidential Spokesman, Bassam Rady, said in a statement.

Sudan: Bashir tried on charges of heading 1989 coup

21 July 2020; MEMO: Former Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir and 16 others will appear before a special court of three judges in Khartoum today on charges of carrying out a coup against the elected government in 1989.

Moez Hadarah, part of the public prosecution, said: “The defendants are brought to trial under Article 96 of the 1983 Sudanese Criminal Code, which undermines constitutional order and Article 78 of the same Act, namely, participation in the criminal act.”

Lebanon: Former Nissan Chief Fails To Appear Before France Court Due To “Technical Obstacle”

BEIRUT, July 21 (NNN-NNA) – Former CEO of Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, said that he failed to appear before the court in France on July 13, due to “technical obstacle,” Lebanon’s local media reported on Monday.

Ghosn said that his passport is held by the Attorney General in Lebanon, since Japan issued an international arrest warrant on him.
