UAE: Long-haul carrier Emirates says it fires staff amid virus

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Dubai’s long-haul carrier Emirates said Sunday it fired an undisclosed number of employees as the coronavirus pandemic has halted global aviation, becoming the latest Mideast airline to shed staff over the outbreak.

Emirates, the jewel of the sheikhdom’s vast array of state-linked enterprises known as “Dubai Inc.” to diplomats and investors, declined to offer figures on how many staff it fired.

Dozens of Israel settlers storm Al-Aqsa as site reopens

31 May 2020; MEMO: Dozens of Jewish settlers today forced their way into Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque complex, shortly after the site was reopened, according to the mosque director, reports Anadolu Agency. 

“Around 105 Jewish settlers have entered the compound since early morning under protection of Israeli police,” Omar Kiswani, director of Al-Aqsa Mosque, told Anadolu Agency.

Turkey opens another emergency hospital in Istanbul

31 May 2020; MEMO: Turkey opened an emergency hospital in the Turkish metropolis Istanbul as part of the country’s continued fight against the pandemic, reports Anadolu Agency..

The new Yesilkoy Prof Murat Dilmener Emergency Hospital in Istanbul is named after a Turkish doctor and academic who was claimed by the virus on 3 May.

Attending the opening ceremony were Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Vice President Fuat Oktay, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca, and other top officials.

Iran's new parliament speaker says talks with US 'futile'

31 May 2020; AFP: Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf said any negotiations with the United States would be "futile" as he delivered his first major speech to the conservative-dominated chamber on Sunday.

Ghalibaf, a former commander of the Revolutionary Guards' air force, was elected speaker on Thursday after February elections that swung the balance in the legislature towards ultra-conservatives.

Iran Condemns U.S. Revoke Of Nuke-Related Sanctions Waivers

TEHRAN, May 31 (NNN-IRNA) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the recent U.S. decision to end the sanctions waivers under the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal.

The U.S. move, to end the remaining sanctions waivers under the landmark deal is a “violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231” which endorses the deal, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Abbas Mousavi, said.

Syria Receives MiG-29 Warplanes From Russia

DAMASCUS, May 31 (NNN-SANA) – The Syrian army, on Saturday, received a batch of MiG-29 warplanes from Russia.

The delivery took place during a ceremony, held at the Russian-run Hmeimim air base, in Syria’s north-western province of Latakia, said the report, adding that, the warplanes flew from Hmeimim to the respected Syrian bases.

The Syrian pilots will start using the warplanes in manoeuvres, as of June (tomorrow), said the report.

Egyptian, French presidents discuss regional issues, focus on war-torn Libya

CAIRO, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron discussed on Saturday the development of several regional issues, including the situation in Libya.

During a phone call, Macron said he is keen to exchange views with Sisi over these issues as Cairo plays a key political role in the region, Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said in a statement.
