Iran: 43 infected with coronavirus; patient zero identified

23 Feb 2020; MEMO: Iran has confirmed 15 new cases of the new coronavirus, taking the total to 43 with a death toll of eight, reports Reuters. Most of the infections have been in the Shia Muslim holy city of Qom.

According to the Iranian Health Minister Saeed Namaki:

"The virus came from China to Qom city. A Merchant from Qom who died of the virus used to regularly travel to China … Flights were suspended between the two countries but he used indirect flights."

Israel may quarantine 200 South Korean visitors in army base: report

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel may quarantine some 200 visitors from South Korea in a military base south of Jerusalem over coronavirus worries, Israel’s Ynet news site reported on Sunday.

Israeli officials had no immediate comment on the report. Interior Minister Aryeh Deri said separately on Sunday that he had ordered South Korea and Japan added to a list of Asian countries to which travel to and from Israel was being barred.

Israeli fire kills Palestinian trying to plant bomb at Gaza border: Israeli military

GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli forces killed a Palestinian trying to plant explosives near Israel’s border security fence with the Gaza Strip on Sunday, the Israeli military said.

The Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad said the man was one of its members, but it did not disclose what he was doing in the area.

In a statement, the Israeli military said soldiers opened fire at two Palestinians placing an explosive device next to the fence in the Hamas Islamist-run enclave.

It said one of the men was killed and a military bulldozer removed his body.

SAUDI ARABIA: G20 agrees on final communique with reference to climate change

RIYADH (Reuters) - Finance officials from the world’s 20 biggest economies (G20) meeting in Riyadh on Sunday reached agreement on the wording of a final communique that includes for the first time a reference to climate change, G20 diplomatic sources said.

Compromise language hammered out to overcome U.S. objections retained a reference to the Financial Stability Board’s work examining the implications of climate change for financial stability, although it dropped climate change from its list of downside risks to global economic growth.

Iraq extends ban on border crossings by Iranians

(Reuters) - Iraq has extended an entry ban for any non-Iraqis coming from Iran, the prime minister said, as authorities in Tehran announced 15 more cases of coronavirus and a death toll of eight.

Baghdad had banned crossings by non-Iraqis from Iran on Thursday for three days and Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said on Saturday night that the ban would be extended. He did not specify until when.

“The prime minister ordered the ... halting of receiving travelers from the Islamic Republic of Iran except for Iraqis,” his office said in a statement.

Saudi-led coalition says foils Houthi attack in Red Sea

RIYADH, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Saudi-led coalition involved in a war in Yemen announced on Sunday the foiling of a "terrorist attack" in the Red Sea.

The spokesperson of the coalition, Turki Al-Maliki, said in a statement that the attack using a remote-controlled exploding boat by the Houthi militia was foiled in the southern Red Sea on Sunday morning .

The Houthi militia launched the rigged boat off Hodeidah Governorate and the coalition navy forces destroyed the boat, he said.
