Israel: Tens of thousands protest against government's judicial overhaul

23 July 2023; MEMO: Tens of thousands of Israelis protested across the country on Saturday ahead of a vote on the bill that would limit the Supreme Court from using the standard of "reasonableness" to strike down government decisions, Anadolu reports.

A contentious judicial overhaul plan spearheaded by Prime Minister Netanyahu has sparked 29 weeks of mass protests. The overhaul also calls for changing the way judges are selected.

Police Seized Over 1.5 Tonnes Of Illicit Drugs In SE Iran

TEHRAN, Jul 23 (NNN-IRNA) – The Iranian anti-narcotics police seized over 1.5 tonnes of drugs, in operations in the south-eastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan over the past three days.

During the operations, the police ambushed members of two armed narcotics trafficking gangs, who were transferring illegal drugs from the province to other Iranian cities in eight sedans, through provincial roads, Doostali Jalilian, the provincial police chief, was quoted as saying.

Yemeni Authorities Arrested 12 Over Killing Of WFP Employee

ADEN, Jul 23 (NNN-SABA) – Yemeni security forces detained 12 suspects yesterday, in an operation to track down perpetrators who had shot dead an employee of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) a day earlier, a government official said.

Meanwhile, the security forces’ search operation was still underway to find those who masterminded the drive-by shooting attack, the official said.

Sudan war enters 100th day as mediation attempts fail

July 23 (Reuters) - Clashes flared in parts of Sudan on the 100th day of the war on Sunday as mediation attempts by regional and international powers fail to find a path out of an increasingly intractable conflict.

The fighting broke out on April 15 as the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) vied for power, since when more than 3 million people have been uprooted, including more than 700,000 who have fled to neighbouring countries.

Some 1,136 people have been killed, according to the health ministry, though officials believe the number is higher.

Iranian, UAE FMs condemn Quran desecration in Denmark, Sweden

TEHRAN, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Iranian foreign minister held a phone call with his UAE counterpart late on Saturday to discuss bilateral ties and the recent desecration of the Muslim holy book of Quran in Denmark and Sweden, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced Sunday.

During the phone call, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said the recent desecration of the Quran in the two Nordic countries hurt the feelings of Muslims worldwide, calling for serious actions against perpetrators of the insults.

Turkish Court issues arrest warrant for far-right Danish politician over Quran burning

20 July 2023; MEMO: A Turkish Court issued an arrest warrant for Rasmus Paludan, a far-right Danish leader, following his controversial act of burning a copy of the Quran in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm, Anadolu Agency reports.

The incident, which took place on 21 January, sparked outrage and condemnation across the Islamic world.

Israel on brink of civil war, warns former head of domestic intelligence service

20 July 2023; MEMO: Former head of Israel's domestic intelligence service, Shin Bet, on Thursday warned the country is on the brink of civil war due to mass protests against the government's judicial overhaul plan, Anadolu Agency reports.

"I have to say, I am afraid that we are on the brink of civil war," Nadav Argaman told Israeli Army Radio.

Shin Bet is the internal intelligence service in Israel, which is also responsible for arresting and interrogating Palestinians.
