Algeria presidential candidates to participate in first televised debate

04 Dec 2019; MEMO: Algeria’s National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) announced on Monday that the five presidential candidates would participate in a television debate on Friday ahead of the elections scheduled for December 12.

ANIE spokesman, Ali Draa said in a statement that the date of the televised debate between the five presidential candidates would take place on Friday.

Palestinian prisoners to begin open hunger strike in Israeli Ashkelon Prison

04 Dec 2019; MEMO: Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli Ashkelon Prison announced on Tuesday their intention to go on an open-ended hunger strike in protest against escalating repressive measures by the prison administration.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club said 33 prisoners will go on an open-ended hunger strike from Wednesday.

According to the Club, the prison administration has carried out a new repressive measure against the prisoners by transferring ten of them from the prison.

Qatari Emir Receives Invitation From Saudi King To Attend GCC Summit In Riyadh

DOHA, Dec 4 (NNN-QNA) – The Qatari Emir received an invitation from the Saudi King, to attend the 40th Gulf Cooperation Council summit.

Qatari Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, received a written invitation from King Salman bin Abdelaziz Al Saud, to attend the 40th session of the GCC Supreme Council, to be held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on Dec 10.

The invitation was first received by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatari minister of foreign affairs, during his meeting with Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, secretary general of the GCC.

Five Rockets Hit Airbase Housing U.S. Troops In Iraq

BAGHDAD, Dec 4 (NNN-NINA) – Five rockets hit an airbase that houses U.S. troops, in Iraq’s western province of Anbar, the Iraqi military said.

The rockets struck the Ain al-Asad airbase, where hundreds of U.S. troops are stationed, but caused no casualties, the media office, affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, said, in a statement.

It gave no further details, but added that, more information would be released later.

U.S. Vice President, Mike Pence, paid an unannounced visit to the airbase on Nov 23, to meet with the U.S. troops.

Iran Ready To Normalise Ties With Saudi Arabia

TEHRAN, Dec 4 (NNN-IRNA) – Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, said that, Iran is ready to normalise ties with Saudi Arabia.

“From Iran’s point of view, there is no problem in developing ties with neighbours and resuming relations with Saudi Arabia,” Rouhani remarked in a meeting with visiting Omani Foreign Minister, Yousef Bin Alawi, in Tehran.

“All regional countries should stay together, in order to create peace and stability in the region,” Rouhani said.

African economic conference calls on policymakers to curb red-tape

SHARM EL SHEIKH (Egypt), Dec 4 (NNN-XINHUA) — The African Economic Conference (AEC-2019) called on African policymakers to take bold steps to tackle red-tape and high startup costs in order to create decent and well-paying jobs for the continent’s youth.

The call was made by African experts and policymakers attending this year’s edition of the African Economic Conference, a flagship joint initiative of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Egypt Says New Meeting On Nile Dam Dispute To Be Held In Washington

CAIRO, Dec 4 (NNN-MENA) – Egypt said, a new trilateral meeting on the disputed Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), will be held in Washington on Dec 9.

Irrigation ministers of Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan will attend the meeting, to evaluate the results of the first and second rounds of talks on the dam, the Egyptian Ministry of Irrigation said, in a statement.

Hundreds Of Syrian Refugees In Lebanon Return Home

BEIRUT, Dec 4 (NNN-NNA) – Hundreds of Syrian refugees have headed home, in the first batch to leave Lebanon, since protests broke out in the small Arab country, more than a month ago.

Since the early hours of Tuesday, scores of Syrians boarded buses in several locations in Lebanon, before heading back to their hometowns in war-torn Syria.

Vanessa Moya of the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, said, some 225 Syrian refugees were scheduled to head back to Syria, raising the number to about 27,000 refugees who have returned to Syria over the past two years.

Saudi Aramco IPO institutional tranche 2.95 times oversubscribed

RIYADH (Reuters) - The institutional tranche of Saudi Aramco’s planned initial public offering (IPO) has been almost three times oversubscribed, receiving orders worth 189.04 billion riyals ($50.4 billion), financial advisers for the IPO said on Tuesday.

The bookbuilding process for allocating shares to institutional buyers - typically asset managers, insurers or pension funds - began on Nov. 17 and investors have until 1700 Saudi time on Dec. 4 to place orders.

Aramco plans to sell 1.5% of its shares in a deal that could raise up to $25.6 billion.
