Israel minister’s draft bill: 3 years jailtime for supporting PA activity in Jerusalem

3 rockets land on Iraqi military base housing U.S. troops

BAGHDAD, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Three Katyusha rockets landed Monday on a military base just north of Baghdad where U.S. trainers are present, the Iraqi military said.

The three rockets landed in the evening on Camp Taji, a military base some 20 km north of the Iraqi capital, a media office affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said in a statement without giving further details.

The huge military installation is located in a rural area and houses U.S. troops tasked with training the Iraqi forces.

Sudan protesters urge night rallies amid standoff with army

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudan’s protest leaders on Monday called for nighttime demonstrations and marches in the capital, Khartoum, and elsewhere in the country, amid a tense standoff with the ruling military over who should lead the transition after the ouster of the autocrat Omar al-Bashir.

The protest leaders said they’ve begun a “revolutionary escalation” to pressure the country’s generals to hand over power to civilians and to condemn the military’s violent dispersal of their sit-in camp in Khartoum earlier this month.

Saudi Arabia say it intercepted 2 Houthi drones

A Saudi military spokesman says the kingdom has intercepted two bomb-laden drones launched by Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.

Col. Turki al-Maliki made the remarks early Tuesday in a statement carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

Al-Maliki says one drone targeted a civilian area in Abha, whose regional airport has become an almost-daily target of the Houthis.

Tensions rise as Iran speeds up enrichment, US sends troops

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran will surpass the uranium-stockpile limit set by its nuclear deal in the next 10 days, an official said Monday, raising pressure on Europeans trying to save the accord a year after the U.S. withdrawal lit the fuse for the heightened tensions now between Tehran and Washington.

Hours later, the two countries seemed locked in a standoff when the Pentagon announced it was sending about 1,000 additional American troops to the Middle East to bolster security in the region in the face of what U.S. officials said was a growing threat from Iran.

Egypt's ousted president Mohammed Morsi dies during trial

Egypt's former President Mohammed Morsi collapsed moments after addressing the court in Cairo, officials said. Morsi, who was 67, had been in custody since his removal after mass protests.

Morsi spoke for about five minutes from a soundproof glass cage at a hearing on charges of espionage when he collapsed. He was pronounced dead in hospital at 16:50 local time. State TV said the cause of death was a heart attack.

Chinese diplomat says Huawei able to serve Egypt in developing tech industry

CAIRO, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Huawei, world's major network equipment supplier, "could serve Egypt in making a leap-forward development for its technology industry," said Xiao Junzheng, charge d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Cairo, on Monday.

"Huawei could provide valuable opportunities for developing countries to adopt the latest technology achievements and accelerate industrialization," Xiao said in his speech at the fifth Euro-Mediterranean Finance Conference, titled "MEDA Finance."

Russian military provides humanitarian aid to refugees from Syria’s Idlib

LATAKIA /Syria/, June 17. /TASS/: The temporary accommodation centers in the Syrian province of Latakia have received refugees from the Idlib de-escalation zone where military activities are ongoing, Spokesman for the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Sides in Syria Sergei Smolinsky told reporters, adding that the Russian military had provided humanitarian aid to the refugees.

"They need help for they are not only facing welfare issues but psychological problems as well," he said.

A U.S. senator says Iran’s decision to break its uranium stockpile limit under the 2015 nuclear deal puts his country in a bind.

Senator Patrick Leahy, a Democrat and vocal opponent of President Donald Trump, said on Monday that Trump’s decision to pull out of the 2015 accord curbing Iran’s nuclear powers was “foolish.”

Turkey to host hot-air balloon festival in Cappadocia

Nevsehir, Turkey, June 17 - Turkey will host a hot-air balloon festival for the first time in Cappadocia, the otherworldly touristic hub famed for its fairy chimneys.

The Cappadocia International Hot-Air Balloon Festival, set for July 3-7, will be organized by the Urgup Municipality in the central Nevsehir province.

During the event, some 150 hot air balloons will take six different flights and 20 balloons of various shapes from nearly a dozen countries will take to the skies.
