Turkish jets hit PKK targets in northern Iraq

15 Apr 2019; AA: Turkish jets destroyed ammunition depots and shelters of the PKK terror group in northern Iraq, the National Defense Ministry said on Monday.

The ministry said in a statement that airstrikes destroyed PKK targets in the Metina, Hakurk, Avasin-Basyan and Zap regions.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU -- has been responsible for the deaths of nearly 40,000 people.

Over 1,300 refugees leave Syria’s Rukban camp in past day

MOSCOW, April 15. /TASS/. More than 1,300 refugees have left the Syrian refugee camp Rukban, located within the US-controlled area, via the safe exit, Major General Viktor Kupchishin, chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Parties in Syria, said.

"During the day, as many as 1,358 refugees managed to leave the Rukban camp via the humanitarian corridor. In all, a total of 3,642 people have left the Rukban camp for the territory controlled by the Syrian authorities since February 19, 2019," he said.

Iran launches 1st China Study Center

TEHRAN, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Allameh Tabataba'i University in Tehran established the country's first China Study Center on Sunday in cooperation with China's Shanghai International Studies University.

Behzad Shahandeh, professor of China Study from Tehran University, was invited to attend the opening ceremony.

Shahandeh paid his first visit to Beijing in 1978, which became the beginning of his academic career.

He stressed in a speech that China was the first country that did not follow the Western model of modernization.

UN envoy discusses formation of constitutional committee with Syrian FM

DAMASCUS, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The UN envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen discussed the formation of the constitutional committee with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem in Damascus on Sunday, state news agency SANA reported.

They discussed the exerted efforts in the political track for resolving the Syrian crisis, including the formation of the constitutional committee, SANA said.

Pedersen briefed al-Moallem on his activities since his last visit to Syria's capital Damascus in March.

No more details were given about the meeting.

Palestinians reject Pompeo's irresponsible remarks on Israeli settlements

RAMALLAH, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinians rejected on Sunday statements by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories, official WAFA news agency reported.

"All types of settlements on Palestinian soil occupied by Israel in 1967 are illegal in accordance with the international legitimacy," Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for the Palestinian presidency, was quoted by WAFA as saying.

Int'l warrior competition starts in Jordan

AMMAN, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The international Annual Warrior Competition, created and hosted by Jordan, started on Sunday at the King Abdullah II Special Operations Training Centre (KASOTC) , state-run Petra news agency reported.

The competition, which features 39 teams from 27 countries, played a key role in bringing the best teams from across the world to compete and learn from each other and exchange expertise, said KASOTC Director General Omar Shugeirat.

The competition provides an opportunity to build partnerships and friendships, he added.

New ruling Sudan military council promises civilian Cabinet

CAIRO (AP) — Sudan’s new ruling military council announced Sunday that it will name a civilian prime minister and Cabinet but not a president to help govern the country following the coup that removed longtime leader Omar al-Bashir.

An army spokesman, Lt. Gen. Shamseldin Kibashi, also said in televised remarks that the military had begun to overhaul security organizations and would not break up demonstrations that have continued outside the military headquarters since Thursday’s coup.

UAE names its first astronaut, who will fly to space in September

MOSCOW, April 13. /TASS/. The United Arab Emirates has announced the name of its first astronaut, who will fly to the International Space Station (ISS) on board Russia’s Soyuz aircraft in September, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has said.

"The Emirati astronaut Hazzaa AlMansoori will fly for an eight-day space mission to ISS aboard a Soyuz-MS 15 spacecraft on 25 September 2019," the organization said in a Twitter post late on Friday.

Palestinian president slams U.S. Mideast peace plan for excluding Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas slammed on Saturday the Middle East peace plan that the United States intends to declare soon for excluding Jerusalem, the official Palestinian News Agency (WAFA) reported.

"The Palestinian cause is passing through difficult circumstances, but the Palestinian people and their leadership are on a level of responsibility," said Abbas during his meeting with the new government in Ramallah.
