Protests in Algeria as president moves closer to 5th run

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has promised to call for new elections within one year if re-elected in April, Algerian state television said on Sunday.

Israeli soldiers kill 2 Palestinians near Ramallah

RAMALLAH, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Two Palestinians were killed and one was injured on Monday morning by Israeli soldiers' gunfire in the village of Kofr Ni'ma in the suburb of the West Bank city of Ramallah, medical sources and eyewitnesses said.

The eyewitnesses said that Israeli soldiers opened fire at three Palestinians in the village, killing two of them and injuring the third one.

Tunisia hosts Arab Interior Ministers Council

TUNIS, March 3 (Xinhua) -- The 36th session of the Arab Interior Ministers Council kicked off on Sunday in Tunis to discuss the common interests in strengthening Arab security cooperation.

"The Arab region is facing serious security challenges, especially terrorism crimes, cybercrimes, illegal immigration and human trafficking," said Tunisian Interior Minister Hichem Fourati at the opening.

These crimes threaten Arab security, and further work is needed to develop means of fighting them, Fourati added.

Syria's Kurds set free nearly 300 IS-linked Syrians

03 Mar 2019; AFP: Nearly 300 Syrians suspected of belonging to the Islamic State jihadist group have been freed because they have "no blood on their hands", Kurdish authorities who were holding them said.

Their release was announced late Saturday by the semi-autonomous Kurdish administration of northern Syria, which said in a statement that 283 Syrians had been set free.

Tribal chiefs and other local officials had lobbied for their release.

Asian film festival kicks off in Egypt, China as guest of honor

CAIRO, March 2 (Xinhua) -- The Sharm El-Sheikh Asian Film Festival (SAFF) opened on Saturday in Egypt's Red Sea South Sinai province, with China as the guest of honor of the festival's third edition.

The opening ceremony was presented in cooperation with the Chinese Cultural Center in Cairo. Ancient Chinese folk dances were performed during the ceremony.

The festival features 58 films from 26 countries competing for nine awards in five competitions.

OPCW confirms chemical weapons use in Douma, Syria

01 Mar 2019; DW: The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) reported that the toxic chemical used in Douma, was likely molecular chlorine.

Despite being given the power to assign blame by its member states last June, the OPCW investigation did not do so for the Douma attack, as it was not part of the mandate for the team investigating the April attack.

63 injured, 45 arrested in Algeria's anti-gov't protest

ALGIERS, March 1 (Xinhua) -- As many as 56 police officers and seven citizens were injured during Friday's massive anti-government protest in Algeria, local police department said in a statement.

Despite peaceful marches, the demonstrators were intruded by groups of troublemakers and rubbers, who stole money from a fuel station in downtown Algiers.

They also set fire on two vehicles and vandalized facades of a state-run bank and Djazair Hotel, near the neighborhood of El Mouradia, where the presidency's headquarters were located.

Turkey-U.S. group meeting discusses Syria pullout

ANKARA, March 1 (Xinhua) -- The Turkey-U.S. Joint Working Group to coordinate the U.S. troop withdrawal from Syria concluded a two-day meeting in Ankara, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The bilateral meeting focused on the U.S. pullout from Syria's Manbij and the area east of the Euphrates River.

This is the second meeting of its kind following the initial one held in Washington on Feb. 6.

The group meeting in Ankara is operating as a sub-unit of the Syria Working Group established in February 2018 between Turkey and the United States.

Israel attorney general says plans to indict Netanyahu

28 Feb 2019; AFP: Israel's attorney general announced Thursday he intended to indict Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust in a decision just weeks ahead of April elections.

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit said in a statement that he intended to charge the premier pending a hearing, where Netanyahu would be given a chance to defend himself before charges are filed.
