Iran- Saudi political ties to lead to cease-fire in Yemen: Tehran

12 Mar 2023; MEMO: Iran said the resumption of political relations with Saudi Arabia will accelerate efforts aimed at reaching a cease-fire in war-torn Yemen, Anadolu reports.

"The relations between Riyadh and Tehran are important at three bilateral, regional, and international levels," Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations said in a statement cited by the state news agency IRNA.

Israel: Anti-government protests resume for 10th straight week

12 Mar 2023; MEMO: Tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets Saturday to protest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing policies and a plan that would restrict the powers of the judiciary, Anadolu reports.

Israelis have held demonstrations every Saturday against the judicial regulation of the extreme right-wing coalition government led by Netanyahu.

Iran says initial deal reached with US for prisoner swap

12 Mar 2023; MEMO: Iran and the United States have reached an agreement to exchange prisoners, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian told state TV on Sunday, adding that he hoped the exchange would take place soon, Reuters reports.

"Regarding the issue of prisoner swaps between Iran and the US we have reached an agreement in the recent days and if everything goes well on the U.S. side, I think we will witness a prisoner exchange in a short period," Amirabdollahian said.

Iran upholds death sentence of Swedish-Iranian Arab dissident

Iran to buy Su-35 fighter jets from Russia

12 Mar 2023; MEMO: Iran has reached a deal to buy advanced Su-35 fighter planes from Russia, Iranian state media said on Saturday, expanding a relationship that has seen Iranian-built drones used in Russia's war on Ukraine, Reuters reports.

"The Sukhoi-35 fighter planes are technically acceptable to Iran and Iran has finalised a contract for their purchase," the broadcaster IRIB quoted Iran's mission to the United Nations in New York as saying.

Saudi Arabia seeks US security guarantees, nuclear assistance in return for Israel normalisation

12 Mar 2023; MEMO: Saudi Arabia is reportedly seeking a number of conditions to be met by the United States in return for its normalisation of relations with Israel, a report has claimed.

According to the New York Times, Saudi Arabia has said that it could potentially normalise ties with Israel if the US provides it security guarantees, assistance in its civilian nuclear program, and the lifting of restrictions on arms sales to the kingdom.

Death toll from devastating earthquakes in Turkey reaches 48,000 — Erdogan

ANKARA, March 12. /TASS/: The February devastating earthquakes in Turkey have claimed the lives of at least 48,000 people, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday while visiting the Hatay Province that was hit the most by the earthquakes.

"The death toll has amounted to 48,000, more than 115,000 were injured. Some 50,000 buildings were ruined. And no country could have reacted that swiftly to such a large-scale calamity," the TRT television channel quoted him as saying.

UAE withdraws bid for 2026 World Bank-IMF meetings in favour of Qatar

DOHA March 12 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has withdrawn its bid to host the 2026 World Bank and International Monetary Fund meeting and will instead support Qatar as a potential host, the office of Qatar's emir and the UAE's state news agency said on Sunday, in the latest sign of warming ties between the Gulf neighbours.

The decision came during a phone call between UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Qatar's emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, statements from state news agency WAM and the Amiri Diwan said.
