OIC to discuss situation at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa on Tuesday

09 Jan 2023; MEMO: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will hold an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday to discuss Israeli violations at the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in Occupied East Jerusalem, Anadolu News Agency reports.

In a statement, the Jeddah-based organisation said the meeting comes "after the continuous Israeli escalation in the Occupied city of Al-Quds [Jerusalem] and the continuous violations against the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque."

Turkish defence industry sets $6bn export target for 2023

09 Jan 2023; MEMO: Turkiye's defence industry has exceeded its export target in 2022 and is looking forward to reaching $6 billion (TL 112.53 billion) in 2023, Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB), Ismail Demir, said at the "Defence Industry 2023 Goals" news conference held in Teknopark, Istanbul.

According to the report, Turkiye is set to see important milestones in defence production in 2023, the 100th anniversary of the Republic.

Saudi Arabia to host pre-pandemic numbers for 2023 Haj pilgrimage season

09 Jan 2023; MEMO: Saudi Arabia will remove COVID-19 restrictions for the 2023 Haj season and host pre-pandemic numbers of pilgrims, the Kingdom's Ministry of Haj and Umrah said on Monday, Reuters reports.

In 2019, the last year before the pandemic struck, some 2.6 million people performed the Haj. The Kingdom allowed only limited numbers from its residents in 2020 and 2021 before it welcomed back one million foreign pilgrims in 2022.

Turkiye strives to boost ties with all African countries; FM

09 Jan 2023; MEMO: The Turkish Foreign Minister, on Monday, said Turkiye "works hard" to strengthen its ties with all African countries, stressing in particular, South Africa, his first stop on a five-nation African tour, Anadolu News Agency reports.

"Today, we maintain strong ties with the descendants of Abu Bakr Effendi, who laid the foundation of our friendship with South Africa," said Mevlut Cavusoglu at the inauguration of a new chancellery building at the Turkish Consulate in Cape Town, South Africa.

Israel Netanyahu accused of 'eliminating democracy' amid judicial reform row

09 Jan 2023; MEMO: Israeli opposition leader, Yair Lapid, on Monday, accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of "eliminating democracy" in Israel amid a row over a proposed judicial reform, Anadolu News Agency reports.

"This is not judicial reform, this is extreme regime change […] this is cutting Israel off from the family of liberal countries," Lapid said on Twitter.

Egypt: Inflation up to 22% in December

10 Jan 2023; MEMO: Inflation reached 21.9 per cent in Egypt in December, up from 19.2 per cent the previous month, the  state-run Central Agency for Mobilization and Statistics revealed today; the highest level since December 2017.

"This is primarily due to pass-through effects from the pound's depreciation at the end of October, as well as further weakening of the currency in the parallel market through December," Goldman Sachs said.

Tunisia Rescued 305 Italy-Bound Migrants From Sinking Boats

TUNIS, Jan 9 (NNN-TAP) – Tunisia’s naval guards rescued 305 Italy-bound illegal migrants from sinking boats, off the country’s coasts late Saturday night, National Guard Spokesman, Houcemeddine Jbabli said, yesterday.

The naval guards have foiled eight attempts by illegal migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, to cross the Mediterranean, Jbabli said in a statement.

Tunisian authorities will take necessary measures against the illegal immigrants, it noted.
