Gantz threatens to use force against Iran for a new, better nuclear deal

20 Dec 2022; MEMO: Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz called yesterday for taking advantage of the current unrest in Iran to put serious pressure on the government for a new and improved nuclear agreement, Maariv has reported. Gantz made his comment at the opening of the annual Jewish Media Summit organised by the Israeli Government Press Office attended by more than 100 Jewish journalists from all over the world.

UK: Queen Mary University votes to disaffiliate from NUS after Dallali sacking

20 Dec 2022; MEMO: Students at Queen Mary University, London, have voted to disaffiliate from the National Union of Students (NUS) in response to Shaima Dallali being fired as president.

Queen Mary Students' Union accused the NUS of having "contributed to the spread of anti-Palestinian racism" by firing Dallali, and described her removal as an "affront to the democratic nature that the NUS purports to obtain".

Israel bombs Damascus, killing two Syrian soldiers

20 Dec 2022; MEMO: Israeli warplanes bombed targets in the vicinity of the Syrian capital, Damascus, last night, killing two soldiers, the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) has reported.

At least four missiles were fired from the Israeli aircraft, targeting the area around Damascus International Airport. According to Sana, one of the targets of the attack was an air defence battery that was deployed recently near the airport.

Palestine: Illegal Israele settlers celebrate Hanukkah inside Ibrahimi Mosque

20 Dec 2022; MEMO: Palestinians expressed concerns after groups of Israeli settlers stormed the Ibrahimi Mosque yesterday and lit menorahs inside its corridors to celebrate Hanukkah under the protection of occupation forces.

The Director of the Hebron Endowment, Nidal Al-Jabari, said that Israeli authorities have been working on Judaising the Ibrahimi Mosque, which is located in the centre of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, through continued excavations.

Algeria's non-oil exports exceed $6bn at end of November

20 Dec 2022; MEMO: Algeria's non-oil exports exceeded $6 billion in the period between the beginning of the year and the end of November, the highest achievement in the country's history since its independence from France in 1962, Trade Minister Kamal Rizik said yesterday.

Rizik's remarks came on the sidelines of the launch of the Algerian Production Exhibition, which will take place in the capital until 24 December, Anadolu Agency reported.

Turkiye: court acquits retired admirals over critical open letter

20 Dec 2022; MEMO: A Turkish court has today acquitted 103 retired admirals who were accused last year of agitating for a "coup" and then arrested after signing an open letter criticising government policies, Anadolu has reported. Charged with "crimes against the security of the state and the constitutional order", the admirals were acquitted over a year after their arrest.

Israel: Knesset passes bill to extend national security minister's powers to police

20 Dec 2022; MEMO: The Knesset (Israel's parliament) on Tuesday approved a controversial bill in its 1st reading to allow the upcoming national security minister to extend his powers to the police, reports Anadolu Agency.

Far-right politician Itamar Ben-Gvir, the leader of the Jewish Strength Party, is set to become the national security minister in the upcoming government of Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu.
