Israel to expand cooperation with US to face Iran; Gantz

27 August 2022; MEMO: Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz has announced that Israel and the US will "continue to expand cooperation in the face of Iran's aggression," Israeli media reported on Friday.
Gantz made his remarks alongside US Central Command Chief Michael Kurilla during a Thursday visit to the US Central Command (CENTCOM) headquarters at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.

Syria: US-Iran clash over oil-rich areas

27 August 2022; MEMO: Bloody clashes between the US and Iran's proxies have occurred in oil-rich Deir ez-Zur, where both have a strategic existence, The New Khalij reported on Friday.

Deir ez-Zur is the largest city in eastern Syria and the seventh largest in the war-torn country. It is located 450 kilometres (280 miles) northeast of Damascus, with the Euphrates River passing through it.

Turkiye, Finland and Sweden agree to continue talks to discuss security concerns

26 August 2022; MEMO: Officials from Turkiye, Finland and Sweden agreed on Friday to continue talks in the coming months to discuss security concerns raised by Turkiye as a pre-condition of allowing the two Nordic countries to join NATO.

Officials from the three countries held the first of these meetings on Friday in the Finnish city, Vantaa.

Iraq: Australia embassy cars in Baghdad targeted, no injuries

27 August 2022; MEMO: An Iraqi security source announced on Friday that vehicles belonging to the Australian embassy had been targeted by an explosive device in Baghdad, with no injuries occurring.

Alsumaria TV news channel quoted an unnamed source stating: "A locally-made explosive device placed on the road leading to the Green Zone went off as a vehicle belonging to the Australian embassy in Baghdad drove by."

Morocco recalls Tunisia ambassador over Western Sahara

RABAT, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Morocco recalled its ambassador to Tunisia on Friday after Tunisian President Kais Saied received the head of the Polisario Front movement that is seeking independence for Western Sahara, a territory Morocco regards as its own.

Morocco said Tunisia's decision to invite Brahim Ghali to a Japanese development summit for Africa that Tunis is hosting this weekend was "a grave and unprecedented act that deeply hurts the feelings of the Moroccan people".

Iran says U.S. presence in Syria "illegal, condemned"

TEHRAN, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman condemned on Friday the U.S. military presence in Syria as an "occupation" and the fresh U.S. airstrikes there as an "illegal aggression against defenders of Syria's independence and territorial integrity."

Nasser Kanaani made the remarks in a tweet, condemning the U.S. justification for its Tuesday airstrikes on Syria's eastern province of Deir ez-Zor.

Turkish minister says concerns over U.S. sanctions warning "meaningless"

ANKARA, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Concerns over the U.S. Treasury's warning about Turkish companies facing sanctions risk if they deal with sanctioned Russians was "meaningless," said Türkiye's finance and treasury minister on Friday.

Nureddin Nebati tweeted that "it is meaningless that the letter sent to Turkish business organizations causes concern in our business circles."

Lebanese submarine finds 10 bodies on sunken migrant ship

BEIRUT (AP) — A Lebanese submarine has found the remains of at least 10 migrants who drowned when their boat sank earlier this year off the coast of Lebanon with about 30 people on board, the navy announced Friday.

The boat, carrying dozens of Lebanese, Syrians and Palestinians trying to migrate by sea to Italy, went down more than 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the port of Tripoli, following a confrontation with the Lebanese navy.

West accuses Sudan military of retreating from cooperation with ICC

26 August 2022; MEMO: The ambassadors of 11 Western countries and the European Union delegation in Khartoum yesterday accused the military rulers in Sudan of retreating from cooperating with the International Criminal Court (ICC) since seizing power in a coup last October, Anadolu news agency reported.
