Tunisia: Opposition will not take part in Saied's referendum; Ghannouchi

12 May 2022; MEMO: Head of Tunisia's Ennahda Party, Rachid Ghannouchi, said that the opposition will not take part in President Kais Saied's planned referendum, Anadolu reported yesterday.

Ghannouchi, who was speaker of parliament befor Saied dissolved the government in July, said his movement's position on the referendum "is part of a national position front which is currently being formed."

Israel: Head of Joint List resigns over members' secret talks with coalition

12 May 2022; MEMO: Head of the Joint List bloc, which includes six Arab MKs, Sami Abu Shehadeh, has resigned over members' secret talks with the Israeli coalition government, Arab48 reported yesterday.

Abu Shehadeh, who is the head of the Balad Party, said that he would discuss his party's partnership with the Joint List in a meeting with party members.

Israel is trying to exonerate itself after murdering journalist Shireen Abu Akleh

12 May 2022; MEMO: Since the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh yesterday morning, Israeli officials have been trying to shift blame onto Palestinians instead of Israeli occupation forces.

According to Arab48, Israeli journalist Barak Ravid said that Israeli media officials met half an hour after Abu Akleh's targeting and decided to try to change international headlines.

Israel narrative about killing Shireen Abu Akleh 'untrue': B'Tselem

12 May 2022; MEMO: The Israeli army's narrative about the killing of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh is "untrue", the Israeli Information Centre for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories (B'Tselem) said yesterday.

"This morning, B'Tselem's field researcher in Jenin documented the exact locations in which the Palestinian gunman depicted in a video distributed by the Israeli army, fired, as well as the exact location in which Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed," B'Tselem tweeted.

UN Envoy Presses Yemeni Warring Factions To Uphold Ceasefire

ADEN, May 11 (NNN-YPA) – The United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, yesterday arrived in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden, for a two-day visit, amid efforts to push the country’s warring parties to uphold a fragile UN-brokered ceasefire.

Grundberg held meetings with Rashad Al-Alimi, president of the Presidential Leadership Council and other high-ranking officials of the internationally-recognised Yemeni government in Aden, over the recent breaches to the UN-brokered truce.

Turkey says killing 10 Kurdish militants in northern Syria

ANKARA, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Turkey on Wednesday "neutralized" 10 members of Syria's Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in northern Syria, the country's Defense Ministry said.

The YPG members were killed as they were preparing to attack Turkey's Operation Euphrates Shield and Operation Olive Branch military zones, the ministry tweeted.

Turkish authorities often use the term "neutralized" to imply "terrorists" killed, wounded, or captured in security operations.

Iran arrests 2 Europeans over promoting unrest

TEHRAN, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian Intelligence Ministry announced on Wednesday that two European individuals aimed at causing "unrest", "social disorder" and "instability" in the country were arrested.

The ministry said in a statement that the two individuals from a European country, who had entered Iran seeking to "abuse the rightful demands of some of the country's associations and social classes and change the direction of the normal requests toward unrest as well as social disorder and instability", were identified and arrested by its forces.
