Iran: Oil production back to pre-sanction levels

26 March 2022; MEMO: Oil production in Iran has risen to what it was before sanctions were imposed by the US in 2018 after former President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear agreement.

The Iranian Ministry of Oil announced in a statement on Friday: "One of the promises of the Oil Ministry in the government of (Iranian) President Ebrahim Raisi has been fulfilled by returning Iran's oil production to the level before the unilateral US sanctions were imposed."

Russia's Wagner Group withdraws fighters in Libya to fight in Ukraine

26 March 2022; MEMO: Russia's Wagner Group has withdrawn about 1,300 of its mercenaries from Libya to Russia through Syria to participate in the Russian military operation in Ukraine, according to military and strategic expert Colonel Adel Abdel Kafi.

According to Abdel Kafi: "The total number of Russian Wagner mercenaries present on Libyan soil is about 2,200."

He added, "Due to its war on Ukraine, Russia decided to withdraw 1,300 Wagner personnel, leaving only 900," according to reports by Anadolu Agency.

Saudi-led coalition sets deadline for Houthi weapons withdrawal from Sanaa airport -Al Arabiya

March 26 (Reuters) - The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen on Saturday set the Iran-aligned group Houthis a three-hour deadline to withdraw weapons from the airport of Sanaa and from two ports on the Red Sea, Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya TV reported.

Retaining weapons in the Yemeni capital's airport and the ports of Hodeidah and Saleef would "end their status" as safe regions not to be targeted by coalition air strikes, it said, without saying exactly at what time the deadline would expire.

Iraq parliament fails to elect new state president over lack of quorum

BAGHDAD, March 26 (Reuters) - Iraq's parliament failed again on Saturday to vote for a president after Iran-backed groups boycotted the session, in a setback to an alliance led by cleric Moqtada al-Sadr which won the election and threatened to remove them from politics.

Sadr had hoped parliament would elect Rebar Ahmed, a veteran Kurdish intelligence official and current interior minister of Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region.

Saudi civil defence puts out fires at fuel storage tanks hit by Houthis

March 26 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's civil defence has extinguished fires at two fuel storage tanks in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah that were hit in an attack by Yemen's Houthis, state television reported on Saturday.

The Iran-aligned Houthis have escalated missile and drone strikes on the kingdom's oil facilities in recent weeks ahead of a temporary truce for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which starts early in April.

Ukraine asks Qatar, others to boost energy exports amid war

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Ukraine’s president called Saturday on energy-rich nations to increase their production of oil and natural gas to counteract the loss of Russian supplies amid sanctions over Moscow’s war on his country.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a surprise video appearance at Qatar’s Doha Forum, an annual summit in the gas-rich nation that will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup later this year. It’s part of a rhetorical offensive of addresses he’s given around the world since the start of the war Feb. 24.

Saudi airstrikes hit Yemen’s Houthis after Jiddah attack

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — A Saudi-led coalition fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen unleashed a barrage of airstrikes on the capital and a strategic Red Sea city, officials said Saturday. At least eight people were killed.

The overnight airstrikes on Sanaa and Hodeida — both held by the Houthis — came a day after the rebels attacked an oil depot in the Saudi city of Jiddah, their highest-profile assault yet on the kingdom.

Lebanese PM expects progress in talks with IMF over meltdown

BEIRUT (AP) — Talks between the Lebanese government and the International Monetary Fund over an economic recovery plan should make progress in the next two weeks, Prime Minister Najib Mikati said Saturday.

Speaking to reporters in Qatar, where he is attending the Doha Forum, Mikati said an IMF delegation will resume talks with the government in Beirut on Tuesday over the country’s economic meltdown that began more than two years ago.
