Mexico City metro crash probe blames structural flaws

MEXICO CITY, June 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) — An investigation into the Mexico City metro disaster revealed Wednesday a series of construction flaws in the overpass that collapsed, killing 26 people and prompting angry demands for justice.

The initial report by Norwegian engineering company DNV said that a structural failure had caused the elevated section to give way on May 3, bringing a passenger train crashing down.

The preliminary findings, which were presented at a news conference by Mexico City authorities, identified a number of deficiencies in the construction process.

The Adventure of the Seas arrived from the Bahamas with around 1,000 passengers on board — a sight for sore eyes for a tourist industry battered by the pandemic.

A group of passengers, mostly from the United States, disembarked to explore the island, braving rain brought by a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mexico: Blunt message, search for answers mark VP’s 1st foreign trip

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris came to Latin America to deliver a message rather than clinch some kind of concrete deal.

She bluntly told migrants not to travel to the United States. She spoke of the evils of government corruption that lead to dislocation. She urged nations to increase enforcement at their borders.

She completed the journey without securing any commitments to increase immigration enforcement or expand pathways to legal migration. But she also did so without a significant mistake.

Only 47% of ballots had been counted late Sunday, but electoral authorities released “quick count” results based on voting samples that allow estimates of the voting trends to determine the rough potential makeup of the Chamber of Deputies.

Benebot, an artificial intelligence robot created in China and being used in more than 40 countries, has a simplistic look, with blue eyes that inspect students’ faces and a type of “stomach” where students place their hands to have their temperature checked.
