India: Murder case eyewitness shot dead on highway in UP

Muzaffarnagar, May 26 (PTI) A man who was an eyewitness to the killing of his brother was shot dead by two bike-born miscreants in Shamli district, a police official said Sunday.

Siyanand, 45, was shot dead on the Meerut-Karnal highway when he was returning home from a sugar mill in Shamli city last evening, the official said.

Police suspect old enmity to be the reason behind the killing.

Siyanand was an eyewitness to the killing of his brother Ravinder, who too was shot dead a few months ago.

Mayor says 2 dead after tornado roars through Oklahoma town

EL RENO, Okla. (AP) — A likely tornado killed at least two people as it destroyed a motel, roared through a nearby mobile home park and caused significant damage in the Oklahoma City area, officials said Sunday.

El Reno Mayor Matt White said during a news conference that “there have been two fatalities at this point in time,” adding that officials are currently working to notify relatives.

White said search and rescue efforts are continuing.

Hawaii woman missing for 2 weeks rescued from Maui forest

WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) — A Hawaii woman has been found alive in a forest on Maui island after going missing more than two weeks ago.

Amanda Eller was found injured in the Makawao Forest Reserve, the Maui News reported Friday.

Family spokeswoman Sarah Haynes confirmed she spoke with Eller’s father, John. Eller was airlifted to safety.

“I was crying tears of joy,” Eller’s mother, Julia, said. “I never gave up hope for a minute. I knew that we would find her.”

US state of Arkansas declares emergency over flooding

US ambassador makes rare visit to Tibet

Beijing : The US ambassador to China is making the first trip toTibet by an American envoy in four years after obtaining rare access to the restricted region, his embassy said Monday.

The visit by Ambassador Terry Branstad comes two months after the US State Department said Beijing had "systematically" impeded access to Tibetan areas for US diplomats, journalists and tourists.

Branstad was scheduled to visit Qinghai province and the neighbouring Tibet Autonomous Region from Sunday until this Saturday, an embassy spokespersonsaid in an email to AFP.

France: Package bomb explodes in Lyon 'attack'

India: NIA files charge sheet in Sikh militancy case

Mumbai, May 24 (PTI) The National Investigation Agency Friday filed a charge sheet in a case related to alleged attempts for revival of Sikh militancy with the ultimate objective of creating a separate 'Khalistan State'.

The Maharashtra ATS had registered a case in this regard in December last year, following which one Harpal Singh Naik from Pune was arrested, the NIA said in a press note.

The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) found a firearm and five bullets from Naik.

India: Powerful IEDs installed by Naxal terrorists seized

Raipur, May 25 (PTI) A major tragedy was averted when security forces recovered five powerful IEDs, planted by Naxals, in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district, police said Saturday.

The IEDs, weighing 10 kg each and packed in cookers, were unearthed from a dirt track near a well between Uparchandeli and Khalichandeli villages under Keshkal police station when a joint team of security forces was carrying out a de-mining operation on Friday to detect explosives planted by ultras, a senior police official told PTI.

India: Mukesh Modi firm's official arrested for multi-crore fraud

Jaipur, May 25 (PTI) The Rajasthan police Saturday conducted raids at several places in the country and arrested 11 current and former office bearers of Mukesh Modi's Adarsh Credit Co-operative Society Ltd in connection with a multi-crore fraud, officials said.

The special operations group of Rajasthan police raided premises at several locations including Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Sirohi, Gurgaon and Jaipur, an SOG official said.

The SOG had begun the probe in July last year and registered an FIR December last year.
