India: CWC tomorrow, Rahul may offer to resign

New Delhi, May 24 (PTI) After a humiliating defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, top Congress leaders will deliberate on party losses at a meeting of the working committee slated on Saturday where party chief Rahul Gandhi is likely to offer his resignation.

According to sources, the party has convened a meeting of the Congress Working Committee, the highest decision making body of the party at 11 AM tomorrow.

Pakistan media terms Modi's victory emphatic mandate

Islamabad, May 24; PTI/GANASHAKTI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's re-election for a second five-year term drew a mixed response from the media in Pakistan with some calling it an emphatic mandate based on national security while others terming it a global trend of right-wing populists sweeping to victory.

Surprisingly the anti-Modi sting in the media was missing as for many outlets it was not an unexpected outcome of the elections.

Two children born in Germany after uterus transplant

24 May 2019; DW: This year, two children were born at the University Women's Hospital in Tübingen whose mothers had previously received a uterus transplant. The doctors involved are thrilled.

It was a "wonderful event," said Diethelm Wallwiener, the medical director of the University Women's Hospital in Tübingen. In March and May of this year, two healthy children were born at the hospital whose mothers had transplanted uteruses.

Indian Polls: No Priyanka 'magic' in UP

New Delhi, May 23 (PTI) Congress workers expected Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to turnaround the fortunes of the party in Uttar Pradesh with the swish of a magic wand, yet her combative and calculative campaign failed to lift the grand old party from the abyss of political irrelevance in the state.

Priyanka, 47, who was appointed AICC general secretary in-charge Uttar Pradesh (east) in January, did manage to create a buzz during the Lok Sabha polls, but failed to revive the party's hopes for the assembly elections scheduled for 2022.

Police won’t fight California use-of-force bill

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Major law enforcement organizations dropped their opposition Thursday to California legislation that strengthens standards for when officers can use deadly force, a shift that followed changes to the measure.

The measure would bar police from using lethal force unless it is “necessary” to defend against an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to officers or bystanders. It was prompted by public outrage over fatal police shootings, including the killing of unarmed vandalism suspect Stephon Clark in Sacramento last year.

Indian Polls: BJP gets over 58 per cent vote share in Rajasthan

Jaipur, May 24 (PTI) The BJP, which won 24 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in Rajasthan where it had lost the 2018 assembly polls to the Congress, saw its vote share increase from 54.94 per cent in 2014 to 58.5 per cent in this general election.

The saffron party had contested on 24 seats and its ally Rastriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) on one seat, which it won.

Mobile internet services suspended in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, May 23 (PTI) Mobile internet services were snapped across the Kashmir Valley on Thursday in the wake of an encounter between militants and security forces in Pulwama district, officials said.

They said the internet services on mobile phones were suspended as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order and stop rumour mongering.

The officials said BSNL's broadband service was working.

Indian Polls: UP Cong chief Raj Babbar resigns

Lucknow May 24 : In the wake of the Congress' dismal performance in the Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh, state party president Raj Babbar has sent his resignation to Rahul Gandhi.

Babbar has sent his resignation to Congress president Rahul Gandhi , a spokesman of the party's state unit Rajiv Bakshi told PTI here.

He has sent his resignation taking responsibility for the party's showing in the just-concluded polls, Bakshi said.

Trump moves to escalate investigation of intel agencies

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has directed the U.S. intelligence community to “quickly and fully cooperate” with Attorney General William Barr’s investigation of the origins of the multi-year probe of whether his 2016 campaign colluded with Russia.

The move Thursday marked an escalation in Trump’s efforts to “investigate the investigators,” as he continues to try to undermine the findings of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe amid mounting Democratic calls to bring impeachment proceedings against Trump.

Iran’s foreign minister in Pakistan amid tensions with US

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Iran’s foreign minister is in Pakistan on a critically timed visit amid a crisis between Tehran and Washington and ahead of next week’s emergency Arab League meeting called by Saudi Arabia as regional tensions escalate.

Mohammad Javad Zarif was holding talks on Friday with his Pakistani counterpart, Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

Ahead of his arrival in Islamabad, Pakistan’s foreign ministry had called on “all sides to show restraint, as any miscalculated move, can transmute into a large-scale conflict.”

Indian female climber dies on Mt Everest

Kathmandu, May 23; PTI/GANASHAKTI:  A 54-year-old Indian woman climber died while descending the Mt Everest, taking the toll of those who perished during this season's expedition in the Himalayan nation to 13, according to a media report on Thursday.

Mumbai-based Anjali S Kulkarni died at above Camp IV after she fell ill while coming down from the summit point on Wednesday, Thupden Sherpa, an official at Arun Treks, which organised the climb said.

Kuwait envoy: No peace until Israel ends occupation
