China says door open to trade talks, but slams tech controls

BEIJING (AP) — China held the door open to resuming talks in the tariff war with Washington on Thursday, but lashed out at limits on access to key technologies that it said might hurt global supply chains.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said China hopes to restart the talks that broke down earlier this month after the U.S. hiked tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese imports, but only if the conditions are deemed fair.

New Delhi, May 22 (PTI) Decisions taken by Rahul Gandhi led to divisions within the opposition, CPI national secretary Atul Kumar Anjaan said Thursday and asserted that the policies of the Congress scion opened the doors for Narendra Modi's victory.

Indian Polls: EC's VVPAT decision goes against SC order: Yechury

New Delhi, May 22; PTI/GANASHAKTI: CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday said the Election Commission's rejection of the Opposition demand to first count the VVPAT slips went against the "spirit" of a Supreme Court order on the devices.

Yechury's reaction comes after the commission is learnt to have stuck to its plan to count the voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) slips in the end and not in the beginning as demanded by the Opposition.

India: Nationalism narrative played big part in BJP win: CPI

Hyderabad, May 23 (PTI) The CPI Thursday said BJP's poll narrative centred on nationalism worked for the party in a big way in the Lok Sabha elections.

"I think it looks like nationalism worked for them in northern states and Karnataka," CPI General Secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy told PTI commenting on the Lok Sabha poll outcome.

"Nationalism worked (for the BJP)... points raised by opposition unemployment, price rise, and ommissions and commissions of the BJP did not stand before the nationalism, particularly northern states," he said.

Bosch pays 90-million-euro fine over diesel scandal

German auto parts supplier Bosch was on Thursday ordered by prosecutors to pay a fine of €90 million ($100 million) over its role supplying components in the "dieselgate" emissions cheating scandal. 

Indian among 18 people arrested in Nigeria for illegal oil export

Abuja, May 23 (PTI) An Indian national is among 18 sailors arrested in Nigeria for allegedly attempting to illegally export stolen crude oil to Ghana, according to media reports.

The arrested sailors were planning to move stolen crude oil from Nigeria with two foreign vessels, MT Apecus and MT Invictus, believed to be owned by Petrogress Incorporation, which has offices in Nigeria, Greece and the US, the Nigerian Navy said.

World shares sink as US-China spat takes center stage

SINGAPORE (AP) — World stock markets fell sharply Thursday as traders focused on tensions between the U.S. and China and braced for the impact of their tariff hikes.

Private surveys, meanwhile, showed continued weakness in the eurozone economy in May, with a slowdown in manufacturing and services.

France’s CAC 40 dropped 1.7% to 5,286 and the DAX in Germany was down 1.8% at 11,948. Britain’s FTSE 100 lost 1.5% to 7,226, after lawmakers rejected Prime Minister Theresa May’s latest Brexit offer and called for her resignation.
