Tesla to investigate Model S exploding car in Shanghai

22 Apr 2019; DW: US electric carmaker Tesla said on Monday it was investigating a video that had gone viral in China that appeared to show one of its cars spontaneously catching fire.

"After finding out about this incident in Shanghai, we immediately sent a team to the scene. We are currently contacting relevant departments to understand the situation. Based on current information, no one was hurt," Tesla wrote on Weibo, the main Chinese social media site.

Australian held in India for carrying satellite phone

Jaipur, Apr 22 (PTI) An Australian citizen was arrested after he was allegedly found carrying a satellite phone at Jaipur airport on Monday, police said.

The satellite phone was recovered from the possession of Corbett during checking before boarding a Delhi-bound flight, DCP (East) Rahul Jain said.

He could not furnish documents and permission for carrying the satellite phone.

He is being interrogated, the DCP added.

Sudan's opposition alliance suspends negotiation with military council

KHARTOUM, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's major opposition alliance announced on Sunday suspension of negotiation with the Transitional Military Council.

"We have decided to suspend the negotiation with the Transitional Military Council," Sudan's opposition Freedom and Change Alliance said in a statement during a press conference at the site of the protesters' sit-in before the army's general headquarter.

Huawei revenue up 39 percent in Q1

SHENZHEN, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese tech giant Huawei's revenue rose 39 percent year on year to 179.7 billion yuan (26.8 billion U.S. dollars) in the first quarter of this year, the company announced on Monday.

The company's net profit margin in the first quarter was about 8 percent, slightly higher than in the same period last year.

Turkey, Belarus sign Antarctic cooperation agreement

ANKARA; 22 Apr 2019; AA: Turkey and Belarus signed an agreement to cooperate on polar research on Monday, months after Turkey completed its third National Antarctic Science Expedition.

The agreement on scientific and technical cooperation in Antarctica was signed by Turkey’s Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank and Vladimir Gusakov, the chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

US to sanction nations for importing Iranian oil

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is poised to tell five nations, including allies Japan, South Korea and Turkey, that they will no longer be exempt from U.S. sanctions if they continue to import oil from Iran, officials said Sunday.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo plans to announce on Monday that the administration will not renew sanctions waivers for the five countries when they expire on May 2, three U.S. officials said. The others are China and India.

Death toll of clashes in Libya's capital rises to 254

TRIPOLI, April 22 (Xinhua) -- A total of 254 people have been killed and 1,228 others injured in the fighting between the UN-backed Libyan government and the east-based army in and around the capital Tripoli so far, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Sunday.

"In the past week, WHO Libya specialized emergency medical teams in frontline hospitals handled 89 major and 63 surgeries. Our teams are bringing in additional help for these hospitals," WHO tweeted later Sunday.

Sri Lanka: Shangri-La suicide bomber identified

According to a report in Sri Lankan Daily Mirror news paper, the police today informed Colombo Chef Magistrate’s Court that the suicide bomber of the Shangri-La hotel had been identified as Insun Seelavan who owned a factory in Avissawella- Wellampitiya road.

Nine employees of the said factory were arrested by the Wellampitiya Police and were remanded till May 6 after being produced in the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, reported Daily Mirror.

India: BJP leadership taken over by Gujaratis

Ballia (UP), Apr 21 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Minister and Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party chief Om Prakash Rajbhar attacked the BJP leadership on Sunday, saying it had been captured by "Gujarati people".

He challenged the party to sack him as minister. "The BJP has not remained Atal-ji's party. It has been captured by Gujarati people. I will not resign as minister now. Let the BJP sack me," Rajbhar told reporters here.

The NetBlocks observatory said it detected an intentional blackout of popular services including Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat and Viber.

India: Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide in U.P.

Muzaffarnagar, April 22 (PTI) A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in a village in Shamli district, police said Monday.

Rajender, 50, had taken a loan from a cooperative society and was finding it difficult to repay it, according to village head Bijender Kumar.

Rajender consumed poison yesterday and was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead. The body has been sent for postmortem, police added.
