At least 7 dead, 10 injured in India stampede

NEW DELHI, April 22 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and 10 others injured due to a stampede during a Hindu temple ceremony in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, police said Monday.

The stampede occurred near Thuraiyur in Tiruchirappalli, about 316 km south of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

"Yesterday hundreds of people had gathered for the 'padikasu' (temple coin) distribution ceremony and a stampede broke out during a local temple festival here," a police official said.

Death toll from Sri Lanka's multiple blasts rises to 290

COLOMBO, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the multiple explosions which shook Sri Lanka on Sunday has risen to 290, while over 500 have been injured, the police said Monday.

Earlier reports put the number of casualties at 228, with 450 wounded in the nine attacks that occurred at three churches and four hotels across the country on Sunday.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority said Sunday evening in a statement that 32 foreigners were among those killed.

India: 70-year-old held for raping minor

New Delhi, Apr 21 (PTI) A 70-year-old man was arrested Sunday for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl in northeast Delhi's Jyoti Nagar area, police said.

According to a senior police officer, the victim and the accused are neighbours.

A case has been registered and the accused and he was arrested, he said.

The condition of the victim is stated to be out of danger, police said, adding further details are awaited.

Curfew declared after 8th blast rocks Sri Lanka's capital

COLOMBO, April 21 (Xinhua) -- An eighth blast ripped through Colombo after a series of explosions rocked the Sri Lankan capital earlier in the day, police confirmed on Sunday.

Police said the latest explosion was reported from Dematagoda in the north of the capital.

The government has imposed a nationwide curfew from 6 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. local time on Monday.

Trump told Mike Rogers, director of the National Security Agency, that news stories alleging that Trump’s 2016 White House campaign had ties to Russia were false and the president asked whether Rogers could do anything to counter them.

Rogers and his deputy Richard Ledgett, who was present for the call, were taken aback.

UNITED NATIONS, April 20 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Saturday night that the killing of an Egyptian peacekeeper in Mali may constitute war crimes.

The UN chief issued a statement in New York, giving details of a deadly bombing that took place on Saturday morning against a UN peacekeeping convoy in central Mali, close to the border with Burkina Faso.

12 students,1 teacher killed in US school shooting honored at ceremony

Climate protesters march in London again; arrests hit 710

Two young men held over killing of N. Irish journalist

Ukraine kicks off 2nd round of presidential election

KIEV, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainians began to cast their ballots on Sunday in a second round of the country's presidential election between actor Volodymyr Zelensky and incumbent President Petro Poroshenko.

The polling stations opened at 8:00 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) and will close at 8:00 p.m. (1700 GMT).

More than 30.3 million voters are eligible to cast their ballots. 199 electoral districts were set up in the country with over 29,900 polling stations. There are also polling stations created abroad.
