Energy-linked CO2 emissions hit record high in 2018

26 Mar 2019; DW: Global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the production of energy reached a new record in 2018, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a report on Tuesday.

CO2 emissions are the main driving force behind global warming, which scientists fear could spiral out of control unless drastic action is taken to reduce global emissions.

India: ED arrests defence agent in VVIP choppers case

New Delhi, Mar 26 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested a defence agent from Delhi in the Rs 3,600-crore VVIP choppers deal case, officials said Tuesday.

They said Sushen Mohan Gupta was arrested late Monday by agency sleuths under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Gupta, they said, has allegedly dealt in defence deals, including the AgustaWestland helicopters deal.

He will be produced before a special PMLA court here Tuesday.

Vehicle involved in Chinese student kidnapping recovered in Toronto

TORONTO, March 25 (Xinhua) -- The minivan involved in the kidnapping of 22-year-old Chinese student Wanzhen Lu in Canada has been recovered, according to York Regional Police in Toronto area Monday.

Police received tips from the public that led them to a location in the City of Toronto where the vehicle used in the kidnapping was located. The vehicle was not occupied at the time.

India: Naresh Goyal to step down from Jet Airways board

Mumbai, Mar 25 (PTI) Jet Airways Founder and Chairman Naresh Goyal and his wife Anita Goyal will resign from the board of the crisis-hit airline, according to a regulatory filing.

The decision was taken at the airline's board meeting held here Monday.

In a filing to the stock exchanges, Jet Airways said Naresh Goyal, Anita Goyal and one nominee of Etihad Airways PJSC would step down from the board.

India: Man booked for beating up brother to death

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Mar 25 (PTI) A man was booked for allegedly thrashing his brother who succumbed to injuries three days later in Lilon village in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police said Monday.

The brother, Amit, died in a hospital Sunday evening, they said.

According to Circle Officer Ashok Kumar, Amit was beaten up by his younger brother Rahul on Holi, which was celebrated on March 21.

India: Ganga water level to be maintained during summer

KANPUR: To cope with the possible water crisis during four hot months, the Jal Kal department had been working on a plan of laying a 1.5 Km direct water pipeline with 1800 mm width at a cost of Rs 10.29 Crore from the Ganga Barrage water storage to Bhairav Ghat pumping station. This pipeline will be directly linked with the pumping station. It has been considered to maintain normal water supply to the city residents.

Pakistan court grants bail to Sharif for his treatment

Islamabad, Mar 26 (PTI) In a relief to Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan's Supreme Court Tuesday granted bail to the jailed former prime minister for six weeks in a corruption case on medical grounds.

Sharif, 69, is in jail since December last year, serving a 7-year imprisonment in the Al Azizia Steel Mills graft case.

Death toll climbs to 78 in one of China's worst industrial blast

Beijing, Mar 25 (PTI) With the death of 14 more people, the toll from a chemical plant explosion in China rose to 78 on Monday, as the Cabinet ordered a nationwide inspection of chemical industries, days after the country witnessed one of the worst industrial accidents in recent times.

The explosion occurred after a fire in the fertilizer factory in Jiangsu province on Thursday, according to the government of Xiangshui county.

Cao Lubao, mayor of the city of Yancheng, Jiangsu province, said that the number of fatalities have increased from 64 on Sunday.

Brenton Tarrant's mother wants death penalty for her son

New Zealand orders top-level inquiry into mosque terror

25 Mar 2019; AFP: New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday ordered an independent judicial inquiry into whether police and intelligence services could have prevented the Christchurch mosque attacks on March 15.

Ardern said a royal commission -- the most powerful judicial probe available under New Zealand law -- was needed to find out how a single gunman was able to kill 50 people in an attack that shocked the world.

Erdogan hails New Zealanders' stance against terrorism
