India: Authorities yet to sanction prosecution of Kanhaiya, others: Police to court

New Delhi, Mar 11 :  The Delhi Police Monday told a court here that authorities were yet to give requisite sanctions to prosecute former JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar and others in a 2016 sedition case.

On January 14, police had filed a charge sheet in the court against Kumar and others, saying he was leading a procession and supported seditious slogans raised on the JNU campus during an event on February 9, 2016.

India: Jet Airways not operating any Boeing 737 MAX

New Delhi, Mar 11 (PTI) Cash-strapped Jet Airways said Monday it is not operating any of the five Boeing 737 MAX in its fleet.

The statement of the airline, which has grounded a significant number of planes, comes amid aviation regulator DGCA being asked to undertake a safety assessment of 737 MAX aircraft following the crash of such a plane in Ethiopia on Sunday.

India: Sharad Pawar not to contest Lok Sabha poll

Pune, Mar 11 (PTI) NCP chief Sharad Pawar Monday said he will not contest next month's Lok Sabha election.

The 78-year-old veteran politician said as two members of his family are going to contest the polls, "somebody had to step back."

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the NCP chief's decision to pull out from poll fray was because he had "sensed the change in the air".

India: Plea in SC seeks ban on roadshows, bike rallies during polls

New Delhi, Mar 11 (PTI) A former DGP of Uttar Pradesh and an environmentalist have urged the Supreme Court to direct the Election Commission to ban roadshows and bike rallies during polls, saying they violate EC's instructions and cause damage to the environment.

The plea, filed by former director general of police Vikram Singh and environmentalist Shaivika Agrawal, was mentioned for urgent listing on Monday before a bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna.

The bench, however, refused to accord urgent listing.

Indian Poll: 1.5 crore new voters join

New Delhi, Mar 11 : The number of people eligible to vote in Lok Sabha polls beginning next month has increased by 8.4 crore as compared to 2014 general election, and these include 1.5 crore "young voters" who are in the 18-19 age group and would exercise their franchise first time, according to the Election Commission.

The total electorate in the country this year has increased to approximately 90 crore compared to 81.5 crore in 2014.

"This marks an increase of more than 8.4 crore electors," the Commission said.

Pompeo to meet Indian Foreign Secretary

Washington, Mar 11 (PTI) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale on Monday, during which the two officials are likely to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of common interest.

Gokhale arrived in the US on Sunday in connection with the bilateral Foreign Office Consultation and Strategic Security Dialogue with his American counterparts, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale and Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Andrea Thompson.

Brussels Jewish Museum attacker gets life sentence

12 Mar 2019; DW: A Belgium court on Monday sentenced a French jihadist to life in prison for murdering four people at Brussel's Jewish Museum in 2014.

Mehdi Nemmouche, 33, was found guilty earlier this month of committing "four terrorist murders" when he gunned down an Israeli couple and two museum workers in cold blood in less than 90 seconds on May 24, 2014.

India: Woman raped by neighbour in Rajasthan

Kota (R'than), Mar 11 (PTI) A 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped in an agricultural field in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, police said on Monday.

According to a police complaint filed by the woman, her neighbour, Dhulichand Tanwar (30), allegedly raped her on Sunday afternoon, Station House Officer Dangipura police station Raju Udaiwal said.

The victim approached police late Sunday evening. The accused has been booked for rape, the SHO said.

The accused has not been arrested yet.

India: Married woman abducted, raped for over 20 days

Kota, Mar 11 (PTI) A 30-year-old married woman from Rajasthan's Jhalawar district was abducted and raped for over 20 days by a family acquaintance from a neighbouring village, police said Monday.

The accused, Shanti Lal Mehar from Bandi village, held the victim captive at different spots in Jhalawar as well as neighbouring Gujarat, police said.

The woman was freed by the accused on Sunday and after narrating the ordeal to her husband, she lodged an FIR at the Khanpur Police Station, sub inspector Surendra Singh said.

India: Man held for raping schoolgirl in Jhabua

Jhabua (MP), Mar 11 (PTI) A 20-year-old man was Monday arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in Madhya Pradesh's Jhabua district, police said.

Accused Raju Ninama had Saturday told the 13-year-old girl, a Class VII student and inmate of a hostel here, that her father wanted to talk to her, Inspector Aarti Chrate of Meghnagar police station said.

"Since the accused was known to the victim, she rode pillion on his motorcycle on Saturday. However, Ninama took the victim to his uncle's house and raped her," the official said.
