India: 'Death warrant' against teacher for raping 4-year-old girl

Jabalpur (MP), Feb 4 (PTI) A trial court in Madhya Pradesh has issued a 'death warrant' against a school teacher who has been convicted of raping a four-year-old girl.

The trial court in Satna district has sent the death warrant of Mahendra Singh Gond (28) to the Central Jail in Jabalpur, a prison official said on Monday.

Iraq's president rejects U.S. comments to "watch Iran" from Iraq

BAGHDAD, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Iraq's President Barham Salih on Monday rejected any role for U.S. troops in Iraq beyond helping Iraq's security forces.

Salih's comments came during the Rafidain Center for Dialogue (RCD) Forum in Baghdad, in response to a question regarding recent comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump and the intention of the latter to keep an eye on Iran through his troops in Iraq.

"The presence of U.S. troops in Iraq is part of an agreement to support Iraqi forces in the fight against terror," Salih said.

Israel builds new barrier along Gaza Strip border

04 Feb 2019; DW: Israel on Sunday said it had started to build a new barrier along its border with the Gaza Strip, according to the Defense Ministry.

The ministry said in a statement that the above-ground barrier — 65 kilometers long and six meters high — would work in conjunction with an underground wall also under construction, to neutralize the possibility of cross-border tunnels built by Hamas militants.

Pentagon to send 3,750 more troops to U.S.-Mexico border

WASHINGTON, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Pentagon announced Sunday that it is deploying 3,750 more active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border for three months to support border agents.

The deployment will raise the total active duty forces supporting U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents to approximately 4,350, according to a statement released by the Pentagon.

"Additional units are being deployed for 90 days, and we will continue to evaluate the force composition required to meet the mission to protect and secure the southern border," the statement said.

1 deputy killed, another wounded in 12-hour standoff in Ohio

Cincinnati, Feb 3 : A sheriff's deputy was shot and killed during a 12-hour standoff at an apartment complex in Ohio that left another deputy wounded and a suspect in custody, authorities said Sunday.

Capt Jeff Sellars of the Clermont County Sheriff's Office said officers responded about 7 pm Saturday to the Royal Oaks Apartments in Pierce Township, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Cincinnati, following a 911 call from a man who said he believed someone was inside his residence.
