India: No decision on CBI chief, PM-led panel to meet again

New Delhi, Jan 24 (PTI) The meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led selection committee to decide on the next CBI chief remained inconclusive, officials said Thursday.

They said no decision on the CBI director's post was taken at the meeting.

"A list of eligible officers along with their dossiers was shared with the panel members. But no decision has been taken so far," an official said requesting anonymity.

He said another meeting of the panel will be held soon to finalise the name.

Indian Cong workers want Priyanka to take on Modi in Varanasi

Varanasi, Jan 24 (PTI) Posters urging Priyanka Gandhi to contest the coming general elections from Varanasi-- Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency-- came up in the holy city on Thursday.

The local unit of the Congress too demanded that Priyanka, who formally entered politics on Wednesday and was appointed the general secretary for Uttar Pradesh East, be pitted directly against Modi to galvanise voters of UP and neighbouring states.

Israel condemns Irish parliament advances anti-settlement bill

JERUSALEM, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Israel condemned on Thursday a vote by the Irish parliament after it backed a bill to ban imports and sales of goods from territories seized by Israel in 1967.

The proposed legislation would ban the trade in goods or services originated from the West Bank settlements and the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.

Israel's foreign ministry slammed the vote as an "expression of pure hostility."

US withdraws some diplomats from Venezuela embassy

WASHINGTON, January 25. /TASS/. The United States withdraws some of its diplomatic staff from the embassy in Caracas, but the diplomatic mission will remain open, a representative of the Department of State told TASS.

"On January 24, 2019, the Department of State ordered the departure of non-emergency direct-hire U.S. government personnel and eligible family members of U.S. government personnel posted to the U.S. Embassy in Caracas," the representative said, adding that the step is "based on the current assessment of the security situation in Venezuela."

India: Haren Pandya murder case: Plea in SC for fresh probe

New Delhi, Jan 24 (PTI) A fresh plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking court-monitored investigation into the murder of former Gujarat minister Haren Pandya.

Pandya, a former minister of state for home in the then Narendra Modi government in Gujarat, was shot dead on March 26, 2003, in Ahmedabad near Law Garden area of the city during his morning walk.

The petition, filed by NGO CPIL, said that there was a need for the fresh probe in the case as some "startling information" has recently come to light which needs to be looked into.

UNIFIL strongly disapproves of Israeli violation of Lebanon's airspace

BEIRUT, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The spokesperson for the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Andrea Tenenti said Thursday that the UNIFIL strongly disapproves of the daily Israeli violation of Lebanon's airspace.

"Using Lebanon's airspace violates Lebanon's sovereignty and UN Resolution 1701. These violation contradict with our goals and efforts of minimizing the level of tension while creating a stable atmosphere in southern Lebanon," Tenenti was quoted as saying by Elnashra, an online independent newspaper.

Indian SC to examine Gov decision for 10% quota to poor Upper Caste

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) The Supreme Court Friday decided to examine the Centre's decision to grant 10 percent reservation in jobs and education to poor candidates belonging to general category.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna issued notice to the central government on various petitions challenging the validity of the Constitution (103 Amendment) Act, 2019, which paved the way for grant of quota to poor belonging to general category.

The university said it followed procedure and believed that the motorcycle procession was meant to polarise students on the campus.

Unemployment benefits filed by fed workers spike during US gov't shutdown

WASHINGTON, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- A total of 25,419 federal employees filed for unemployment benefits in the week ending Jan. 12, up from 10,454 in the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday.

During the same period last year, only 1,658 claims were filed. Federal employees file jobless claims under a separate program than regular state programs, and the figure is reported with a one-week lag.

South Australia heatwave smashes record temperatures

25 Jan 2019; AFP: Temperatures in southern Australia topped 49 degrees on Thursday, shattering previous records as sizzling citizens received free beer and heat-stressed bats fell from trees.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported temperatures of 49.5 Celsius (120 Fahrenheit) north of Adelaide, while inside the city temperatures reached 47.7 Celsius, breaking a record that had stood since 1939.
