Swiss shipping line agrees to pay container spill cleanup costs

Swiss shipping line MSC said on Saturday it will bear the "full costs" of cleaning up debris from a container spill that washed up on Dutch and German shores.

India: Rs 4,300 cr earmarked for creating infra for Kumbh Mela

Chennai, Jan 5 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has allotted Rs 4,300 crore for creating infrastructure necessary to conduct the Kumbh Mela 2019, scheduled to begin from January 15, the state's Minister of Excise and Prohibition Jai Pratap Singh said here Saturday.

Participating in an event organised by trade body FICCI Tamil Nadu Council, he said, the Prayagraj (Allahabad) has UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage of humanity acknowledgement.

Indian university (JNU) spent Rs 13 lakh to host spiritual gurus,

New Delhi, Jan 5 : The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) has called for a two-day strike to protest against the varsity for allegedly spending nearly Rs 13 lakh to host spiritual gurus Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Sadhguru.

The students' body claimed that JNU's vice-chancellor had denied registration to a visually challenged student of the Centre for Japanese Studies, Munesh, who was failed due to lack of facilities as the varsity faced a paucity of funds.

India: Five held in Gujarat for printing fake currency

Ahmedabad, Jan 5 (PTI) Five persons were held in Himmatnagar in Sabarkantha district of Gujarat for allegedly printing and using fake currency notes, police said Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Vijay Vaghela, Vijay Rami, Akshay Rawal, Ashok Parmar and Pravin Patel under IPC section 489 (counterfeiting currency notes) Friday evening.

A colour printer machine, papers and seventeen fake currency notes of Rs 500 denomination were allegedly seized from their possession, a police official said.

India: Man held for raping teenage girl

Panaji, Jan 5 (PTI) A 22-year-old man was arrested Friday from south Goa after a 15-year-old girl accused him of repeated rape over the last six months at the residence of her relative, police said Saturday.

The victim was staying with her maternal aunt in Canacona village since her parents got separated a few months ago, when she came into contact with the accused, identified as Samir Velip, they said.

According to police, Velip allegedly used to rape the girl at the house of her maternal aunt.

India: Kanpur's image to improve with freight corridor

KANPUR: City’s industrial face will secure a new identity with the railways' dedicated freight corridor planned from Amritsar to Kolkatta, said Union minister of state for railways Manoj Sinha. Speaking at a programme organised at Panki Dham railways station here on Saturday. He reiterated that our union government had augmented investment in the railways. It increased from rupees 39 thousand crores in the year 2004 to 148 thousand crores rupees.

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur student tops CAT

KANPUR: The 22-year-old IIT Kanpur B Tech graduate Rounak Majumdar cracked CAT 2018 examination with a one hundred percentile score. His score was 251.38 out of 300.

Regarding his preparations, he said it was quite clear in his mind that time management and CAT related Skills would hold the key. I learnt how to plan management at IIT Kanpur, he added.

India: UPSIC to help LLR in nurses' recruitment

KANPUR: Paucity of nurses will settle soon in the Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital and its associated hospitals here. There has been decided to recruit as many as 150 Para-medical staff through outsourcing. The UPSIC will extend its complete support. So far a total of 143 staff nurses have been providing their services in the Hallet and its associated hospitals. Their scarcity sometimes causes a problem to the patients for even taking an injection.

India: Court sentences man to 10-years imprisonment for rape

Purnea (Bihar), Jan 5 (PTI) A court here Saturday sentenced a man to 10-years imprisonment for raping a minor girl in June 2014.

The Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ-I) K K Sinha also ordered the man to pay a fine of Rs 25,000.

Special Public Prosecutor Nirmala Rani Sah said that the fine amount (Rs 25,000) would be paid to the victim's parents.

The man had raped the minor girl on June 17, 2014 in the vicinity of Janki Nagar village.

Dry ATMs in India: Par panel nudges RBI to fix the problem

New Delhi, Jan 6 (PTI) A parliamentary panel has asked the Reserve Bank to address the problem of perpetually dysfunctional ATMs so as to avoid any situation of forced cash crunch.

The Standing Committee on Finance has also asked banks to install adequate number of ATMs. The panel tabled its report in Parliament last week.

As per a data of RBI, there were 2,21,492 Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in the country as at September-end 2018.

India: Alok Nath gets anticipatory bail in rape case

Mumbai, Jan 5 (PTI) Actor Alok Nath, accused of rape by a woman writer-producer, was granted anticipatory bail by a Mumbai court on Saturday.

Additional Sessions Judge S S Oza granted the pre-arrest bail to Nath on a surety bond of Rs 5 lakh.

It means if the police arrest the actor, he will have to be released on bail after executing a bond.

A case of rape under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against Nath by the city police on November 21.

The complainant accused him of raping her 19 years ago.
