May condemns calls for a second Brexit referendum

LONDON (AP) — Prime Minister Theresa May is set to condemn calls for a second referendum on Britain’s departure from the European Union, saying it would do irreparable damage to trust in democracy.

In remarks released ahead of her speech in the House of Commons on Monday, May says that staging another referendum “would say to millions who trusted in democracy that our democracy does not deliver.”

She’s also expected to argue that such a ballot would exacerbate divisions rather than heal them.

Eleven dead as gunfight sparks protests in Indian Kashmir

15 Dec 2018; AFP: Seven civilians were killed as Indian troops fired on protesters Saturday after a gunfight left three armed rebels and a soldier dead in the disputed region of Kashmir, police and hospital officials said.

The fighting erupted soon after troops laid siege to a house in the southern Pulwama area in Indian-administered Kashmir where the militants were hiding, a police officer said.

Thousands protest 'slave law' in Budapest

17 Dec 2018; AFP: Protesters threw smoke grenades at police who responded with tear gas in Budapest on Sunday as thousands of people rallied against a new "slave law" passed by the government of conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

More than 15,000 people, according to local press reports, joined the demonstration -- the first rally since Orban returned to power in 2010 to bring together all opposition parties, from greens to the far right, under the same banner.

UN calls for 'credible' probe into Khashoggi murder

16 Dec 2018; AFP: UN chief Antonio Guterres called Sunday for a "credible" probe into journalist Jamal Khashoggi's murder in Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul.

"It is absolutely essential to have a credible investigation and to have the punishment of those that were guilty," Guterres said at a conference in Doha.

The UN chief said he had no information on the case except what had been reported in the media.

India: Kamal Nath signs farmers' loan waiver file

Bhopal, Dec 17 (PTI) Loans of up to Rs two lakh of Madhya Pradesh farmers will be waived, with Chief Minister Kamal Nath Monday signing a file to the effect.

The move follows a promise by Congress president Rahul Gandhi during the poll campaign that if people of Madhya Pradesh voted for Congress, then they would implement farmers' loan waiver within 10 days of coming to power.

Nath was sworn in as the state's 18th CM Monday.

U.S. airstrikes kill 62 in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- The United States army said Monday it conducted a total of six airstrikes over the weekend, killing 62 al-Shabab militants in a region southwest of the capital, Mogadishu.

The U.S. Africa Command (Africom) said no civilian was killed in the latest strikes which were carried out on Saturday and Sunday in coordination with Somali government in the vicinity of Gandarshe, about 48 km southwest of Mogadishu.

US missile defense facilities in Europe located within Russia's reach

MOSCOW, December 17. /TASS/. Missile defense facilities of the United States in Europe are located within a reach of Russia’s effective striking forces, Strategic Missile Force Commander Colonel-General Sergei Karakayev said in an interview with Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper.

"We must not forget that the European missile defense facilities are located within the reach of other [not nuclear] effective striking means of our Armed Forces," Karakayev replied to a question regarding the deployment of US missile defense facilities in Romania and Poland.

Indian Govt tussle with RBI could undermine financial stability: S&P

New Delhi, Dec 17 (PTI) Terming the exit of Urjit Patel as credit negative, S&P Global Ratings said the increasing involvement of the government in the affairs of the RBI could undermine the hard-fought improvements in the banking system over the past few years.

"In particular, S&P Global Ratings views as credit negative the circumstances leading to the recent resignation of Urjit Patel, governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). We await any changes to banking system regulation at the next RBI board meeting in January 2019," it said.

Malaysia files criminal charges against Goldman Sachs over state fund scandal

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia filed criminal charges on Monday against Goldman Sachs and two former executives over state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

In a statement, Malaysian Attorney General Tommy Thomas said Goldman Sachs and its former bankers Tim Leissner and Roger Ng are were charged under Malaysian laws over their alleged involvement in a scheme to defraud the Malaysian government.

Next-generation of GPS satellites are headed to space

DENVER (AP) — After months of delays, the U.S. Air Force is about to launch the first of a new generation of GPS satellites, designed to be more accurate, secure and versatile.

But some of their most highly touted features will not be fully available until 2022 or later because of problems in a companion program to develop a new ground control system for the satellites, government auditors said.
