Indian diaspora sending USD 80 bil back home: World Bank

Washington, Dec 8 (PTI) India will retain its position as the world's top recipient of remittances this year with its diaspora sending a whopping USD 80 billion back home, the World Bank said in a report Saturday.

India is followed by China (USD 67 billion), Mexico and the Philippines (USD 34 billion each) and Egypt (USD 26 billion), according to the global lender.

With this, India has retained its top spot on remittances, according to the latest edition of the World Bank's Migration and Development Brief.

Kohli booed by Australian fans in Adelaide

Adelaide, Dec 8 (PTI) Virat Kohli was booed by a small section of the Adelaide Oval crowd when he stepped out to bat in the second innings against Australia, an act that has been criticised by rival batsman Travis Head and former skipper Ricky Ponting.

Kohli came out to bat after the fall of opener K L Rahul and was jeered by a small group of Australian fans. He received similar boos when he had headed to bat on the opening day.

Travis Head, however, wasn't impressed by the behaviour of the crowd.

Trump picks Gen. Mark Milley as next top military adviser

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he’s picked a battle-hardened commander who oversaw troops in Iraq and Afghanistan to be the nation’s next top military adviser.

If confirmed by the Senate, Gen. Mark Milley, who has been chief of the Army since August 2015, would succeed Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Dunford’s term doesn’t end until Oct. 1. Trump said the date of transition is “to be determined.”

Ron Helus and a highway patrolman decided to try to stop the gunman, running in together with assault-style rifles to what turned out to be an ambush.

Almost immediately inside the dark and smoky bar, the gunman fired on the officers, hitting Helus five times. They retreated and returned fire.

US sanctions are 'economic terrorism': Rouhani

Tehran, Dec 8 (AFP) Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said US sanctions were "economic terrorism", as he sought to foster a united front from visiting regional officials on Saturday.

"America's unjust and illegal sanctions against the honourable nation of Iran have targeted our nation as a clear instance of terrorism," Rouhani told a conference in Tehran attended by officials from Afghanistan, China, Pakistan, Russia and Turkey.

India: Ministers need psychiatrists, not farmers: Chavan

Akola (Maha), Dec 7 (PTI) Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan said Friday that it is the ministers of the BJP-led state government who need the services of psychiatrists and not the debt-ridden farmers.

"Maharashtra's ministers need psychiatrists. Farmer suicides are rising because of the drought and debt burden.

New Delhi, Dec 8 (PTI) The Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday locked horns over alleged mass deletion of Bania votes in Delhi, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal saying the traders community would not vote for ruling party at the Centre.

With the AAP alleging deletion of four lakh Bania votes in Delhi, Union minister Vijay Goel tweeted, saying AAP was fooling them.

Taxmen raid TN distillery, seize over Rs 54 crore cash

Chennai, Dec 8 (PTI): Income Tax sleuths Saturday seized over Rs 54 crore of unaccounted cash during searches at multiple premises of a leading Tamil Nadu based distillery here.

Acting on a tip off about suspected tax evasion and backed up by days of spadework related to the company, income tax officials conducted searches at 12 premises belonging to the Director and employees of the distillery.
