PTI's candidate Arif Alvi wins Pakistan's presidential election

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) candidate Arif Alvi has won the presidential election of the country on Tuesday, according to official TV channel PTV News and initial reports of vote counting.

Three candidates competed for the slot of the 13th president of the country for the next five-year term.

Alvi also announced his victory after viewing the initial result at the parliament.

Philippines to buy weapons "only from Israel": president

JERUSALEM, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Tuesday that he decided to purchase weapons only from Israel because the country does not restrict their uses as other countries do, according to officials and local media.

The remarks were made during Duterte's meeting with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin on the third day of his four-day visit to Israel.

He thanked Rivlin for the military and security assistance and knowledge provided by Israel to the Philippines over the past years.

Afghan Taliban announces death of Haqqani network leader

Kabul, Sep 4 (AFP) The Taliban announced Tuesday the death of Jalaluddin Haqqani, a former CIA asset whose eponymous militant group is now considered one of the most dangerous factions fighting Afghan and US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.

The Haqqani network was founded by Jalaluddin, an Afghan mujahideen commander fighting the Soviet occupation in the 1980s with the help of the United States and Pakistan.

Iran launches major petrochemical projects amid "economic wars"

TEHRAN, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday launched new projects to produce methanol, urea and ammonia in the south of the country, Press TV reported.

The projects, inaugurated by President Hassan Rouhani in the southern city of Assalouyeh, will cost 1.85 billion U.S. dollars, it said.

In the opening ceremony, Rouhani said "the sectors that carry the economic burdens, most notably the oil, gas and petrochemical industries" on the frontline of the economic and psychological wars facing Iranians, according to Tasnim news agency.

Media list hardest-hit USA states in trade disputes with China

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- A popular business news website in the United States on Monday published a list showing which states of the nation could be hit the most in trade disputes with China.

The Business Insider made the list based on the share of each state's GDP that was attributable to trade with China, while emphasized "a huge trade war would also drag on U.S. economic growth."

China's super hybrid rice output sets new world record

KUNMING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Super hybrid rice output in test fields in southwestern Yunnan Province has set a new world record, local authorities said Monday.

The latest output of three plots at a super hybrid rice demonstration base located in Datun Township in the city of Gejiu reached an average of 1,152.3 kg per mu (about 0.07 hectares).

The demonstration base started to plant hybrid rice in 2009.

India's CJI Misra recommends Justice Gogoi as next chief justice

New Delhi, Sep 4 (PTI) Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra Tuesday sent a letter to the Central government recommending Justice Ranjan Gogoi as his successor.

Justice Gogoi will be sworn in as the next CJI on October 3.

The CJI has written to the Ministry of Law and Justice endorsing and recommending the name of Justice Gogoi, senior-most judge, as the next CJI.

India to construct 100 airports worth USD 60 billion

New Delhi, Sep 4 (PTI) India plans to construct 100 airports at an estimated cost of USD 60 billion (about Rs 4.2 lakh crore) in the next 10 to 15 years, Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu said Tuesday.

The country's aviation sector is one of the fastest-growing in the world and has recorded 50 months of double-digit traffic growth.

As many as 100 new airports would be built in the next 10 to 15 years for about USD 60 billion. These airports are to be constructed through public private partnership, Prabhu said.

Israeli forces demolish 4 homes in West Bank

BETHLEHEM, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Israeli occupation forces demolished Monday four houses that belong to Palestinians in the south Bethlehem town Al-Walaja in the West Bank.

Palestinian sources said that three homes were leveled to the ground by Israeli authorities, while they forced the owner of a fourth one to demolish her own home at her own expense to avoid a substantial fine imposed by the Israeli Jerusalem municipality.

The owner of the fourth home, Hanan Razem, stopped the process of her home demolition after neighbors intervened to help her.
