Spain loosens coronavirus lockdown but death toll races past 17,000

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain, one of the countries worst hit by the global coronavirus epidemic, on Monday started to ease tough lockdown restrictions that have kept people confined to their homes for more than a month and put a brake on economic activity.

Spain’s cumulative death toll from the coronavirus rose to 17,489 on Monday, up 517 from 16,972 on Sunday, the Health Ministry said. Confirmed cases totalled 169,496, up from 166,019 the previous day.

Spain Sees Continued Fall In COVID-19 Cases And Deaths

MADRID, Apr 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) – The number of new cases of COVID-19 infection and new deaths continued to fall in Spain, according to the daily data published by the Spanish Ministry for Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Services on Sunday.

A total of 6,023 new infections were registered between Saturday and Sunday, fewer than the 7,026 new cases in the previous 24 hours and 7,472 between Thursday and Friday, bringing the country’s total infection cases to 130,759.

Spain Overtakes Italy In Corona Cases

BRUSSELS, Apr 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Spain’s confirmed COVID-19 case tally reached 124,736 on Saturday, surpassing Italy’s 124,632, according to the latest figures from the two countries.

The tally placed Spain first in Europe and second only to the United States worldwide, in terms of confirmed cases.

According to the Centre for Systems Science and Engineering, at Johns Hopkins University, the United States confirmed more than 300,000 infections by Saturday afternoon.

Spain documents more COVID-19 cases than Italy

MADRID, April 3. /TASS/: At least 117,710 cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have been documented in Spain since the start of the outbreak, the Spanish Health Ministry informed on Friday.

The ministry added that 10,935 people have died and 30,513 have recovered. On Thursday afternoon, the ministry reported 110,238 cases of COVID-19 and 10,003 victims of the disease. In the past 24 hours, 932 people have died in Spain from the virus.

Spain corona death toll hits 4,858 as 769 die in 24 hours

MADRID, March 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The death toll in Spain soared over 4,800 Friday after 769 people died in 24 hours, in what was a record one-day figure for fatalities in the country, the government said.

Spain has the world’s second-highest death toll after Italy, and has so far suffered 4,858 deaths, while the number of cases jumped to 64,059. Although the figures showed a daily increase of nearly 8,000 new infections, the uptick comes as Spain moves to dramatically increase its rate of testing, ordering millions of new kits from around the world.

MADRID, March 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Spain’s coronavirus death toll surged above 4,000 on Thursday but the increase in both fatalities and new infections slowed, leaving officials hopeful a nationwide lockdown is starting to curb the spread of the disease.

A total of 655 deaths were recorded in the country in the last 24 hours, bringing the toll to 4,089, the health ministry said.

That however was a 19 percent increase compared with Wednesday when deaths jumped 738 or 27 percent.

Spain's coronavirus death toll surpasses 4,000

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain registered 655 fatalities from the coronavirus over the past 24 hours - down from over 700 on Wednesday, the health ministry reported on Thursday as the total death toll from the epidemic in the country rose to over 4,000.

The overall number of coronavirus cases soared to 56,188 from 47,610 on Wednesday. The number of reported deaths from the virus rose to 4,089 from 3,434 on Wednesday, the ministry said.

Spain’s corona death toll surpasses China’s

MADRID, March 26 (NNN-AGENCIES) —Spain’s death toll from the coronavirus has surpassed the official figure from China, becoming the second highest in the world.

The number of deaths rose by 738 in 24 hours – a daily record – to 3,434, higher than the 683 announced in Italy.

By comparison, China has officially reported 3,285 deaths, while Italy – the worst affected country – has 6,820.

Spain’s rate of infection has increased by a fifth and almost 27,000 people are being treated in hospital.

Spanish soldiers find bodies in retirement homes

24 March 2020; AFP: Spanish soldiers deployed to help fight the new coronavirus outbreak have found elderly patients abandoned, and sometimes dead, at retirement homes, as an ice rink inside a Madrid shopping mall was turned into a temporary morgue to cope with a surge in cases.

The army has been charged with helping to disinfect retirement homes in Spain, one of the countries worst hit by the pandemic. Dozens of deaths from COVID-19 have been recorded at facilities across the country.
